The Sanatorium is the second episode of The Secret in the Woods. It aired on April 18, 2020.

Synopsis[]

Investigating a local myth, Thiago, Liz, Cris, Joui and Cesar goes to the old city' sanatorium, where they discover more about the city's dark past and confronts what remained from that terror time.

Summary[]

The Pequena Carpa Sanatorium, discovered earlier, begins to be explored by the agents. At the entrance, they notice a cold and strange fog, indicating a weakening of the veil. They enter the place, and on the floor there is a large red carpet and old dried blood throughout the environment. The team goes to a table at the end of the room, where they find several papers, among which there is a record of the therapy procedure for the patient 71. They find some documents mentioning Dr. Verruckt, besides the nurses Marinete and Rosa, describing experimental treatments with electrical discharges.

After reading the document, Joui hear noises coming from the end of the hall in front of the table. With this, the quintet decides to investigate the rest of the sanatorium, starting with a first room to the left of the corridor. Cristopher opens the door slowly, and he sees a long-abandoned employee’s room, with a bloody sofa and numerous records scattered around, and on the table, he sees a Beastly Blood Zombie, that jumps to attack him, knocking him down. Due to the attack, the already compromised structure of the sanatorium collapses, making part of the ceiling and walls collapse. In an attempt to dodge, Thiago throws himself towards the main room, separating from the rest of the group due to debris. With the zombie still on top of Cris, Elizabeth takes a shot at the creature, which reacts by attacking Cristopher, snapping his arm and wounding him slightly. Everyone attacks the creature, trying to kill it, however, Cesar is who kills the creature, blasting its skull with a shot of his Desert Eagle. With the fight having ended, they ask Thiago to look for new external information, and return to pick them up as soon as possible.

The team, now without the presence of Thiago, continues looking for information inside the sanatorium, entering a rather messy deposit and smelling of rotten medicine. There, they find evidence of the use of pentylenetetrazol - a currently banned remedy, which has as its main feature the induction of epilepsy - and also Lysergic acid diethylamide, scientific name of the drug known as LSD. Deeper in this same warehouse, Liz encounters two humanoid creatures with characteristics similar to that of the Beastly Blood Zombie, only less beastly and weaker. This combat is more easily resolved, even if it was equally repugnant. The less beastly creatures had more flaccid structure, so shots and body fights were responsible for disfiguring them and spreading a disgusting mixture of ooze and blood throughout the room as a result of the clash. Joui and Cris are slightly injured after respectively a scratch and a bite from the Blood Zombies.

On next, Liz finds 5 keys numbered from 1 to 6, noting that the number 4 key was missing, which bothers Joui, claiming that there is a Japanese superstition that relates bad things to the number 4. In addition to these, there is in the set a 6th key without numbering, which has a clearly distinct design from the others, whole of iron and without label. Returning to the main corridor, the team finds a large trail of blood, which runs to a door on the left at the end of the corridor, with a sign above written "File". In addition, there is a large metal gate on the right side, with a panel on the wall that Cesar claims to lack something similar to a fuse for its operation. Inside the metal gate, it is possible to observe a large hall smelling of rotten meat, broken floor, numerous signs of scratches, as well as words and unrecognizable drawings on the walls. Wandering around this room, it is possible to identify a silhouette that resembles the two creatures previously found in the warehouse.

The group chooses to initially leave the humanoid blood zombie inside the room, deciding to check the file room, locked. Liz tries to use all 5 numbered keys found earlier to unlock it, however, only succeeds with the numberless key. After unlocking it, only Cesar hears a noise similar to a beat coming from inside the room, and alerts the group. Upon entering the file room, it was possible to identify numerous boxes and papers on metal shelves and cabinets, but no creatures were found inside the room. With this, Cesar begins the search behind documents on July 23 and 24, 1950, finding a file of "Patient 71". After the new discovery, the team focuses on finding information about the nurses previously mentioned in the documents. The results of the searches indicate that all the nurses who worked there were unfit for the work they performed, due to complete lack of prior knowledge about medicine or nursing. Liz concludes that such a predilection for less qualified people is justified by the use of unorthodox and unethical methods of treatment of patients.

The group then repairs the panel, and Joui irritated with the situation goes to see the source of the noise that torments them, and then, he sees coming out of the room a creature, it has two human arms and legs, but all the rest is just a kind of dough full of bubbles, With its arms it holds what once was a person’s belly, open full of teeth, and has some rays of electricity in some random parts of the body. Joui, face to face with the Electric Scratcher, is caught off guard with a creature's bite, but quickly dodges the attack by kicking the monster, but does not seem to have effect. They keep shooting and dodging the monster until Cris tries to get a ladder to help in the battle, but before he gets back, Elizabeth shoots her flare gun at the monster, exploding and killing the monster, which disintegrates into flames.

After this fight, they investigate the past of patient 71, finding some documents about him. They use the Scratcher’s body still with its lightning bolts, to activate a door, and after a fight to get the door activated, they finally manage to activate it. But as they pass the main hall, a beastly zombie appears by surprise, they surround the monster, injuring themselves a little in battle. They go to investigate the cells, they look at some cells and Joui decides to put his ear in one of the doors to see if he hears something and he hears something that looks like a melody, it resonates a lot in his head, and then he just walks out of there and they continue to investigate the cells. Investigating the cell in which the daughter and wife of Virgulino were, they see a very strange creature, an all black form crawling on the ground, it resembles a large black larva, and looking better at this creature, they see that it is formed from the union of two bodies. They quickly finish the monster, but upon touching the creature, Joui and Elizabeth feel something strange, they begin to feel strangely well, and begin to draw the Spiral Symbol on the monster's ooze, but when this hypnosis is over, all that good feeling is revealed to be false and they are affected mentally, losing sanity. In the next cell they find Virgulino’s resignation letter found in the Files, which disagreed with the methods of Verruckt. And as soon as they finish talking about the letter, Thiago returns.

Warning about Patient 71. Found by Cesar Oliveira Cohen in the Pequena Carpa Sanatorium files room.[3]

WARNING PATIENT 71 - CAUTION!
Patient 71 shows more and more bestial behavior, growling and scratching the nurses.
The tests do not seem to have a positive effect. He keeps scratching his belly, stating amid screams that his skin is itching from the inside.
If this pace of progress continues, we will once again have to clean the intestines of a patient from the ground, since he will soon have his stomach torn by his own nails.
PS: to keep the records of the patients in the door of the cells for organization. The nurse Luciene always changes the forms unintentionally.

Patients, mother and daughter, are obsessed with spirals. They keep whispering and drawing words like "The Five Guardians." " The Cradle" "The Infinite Labyrinth" "Our Holy" and the same drawing without stopping.
If separated, they scream until they are together again.
Doctor advised to give notebooks and writing tools so that they do not use their own blood as ink.
Usually walk in circles and do not show interest in feeding or sleeping.
Dr. Verruckt said to feed forcibly! They are becoming malnourished! If they are attached to each other, we can use force.
Patients were relatives of our former employee Doctor Virgulino, who sent his resignation letter in 1917.

Virgulino Batista's resignation letter. Found in the Pequena Carpa Sanatorium files room.[6]

Doctor Virgulino’s resignation letter
Employee: Virgulino Batista;
Age: 53
Occupation: Psychiatrist
Date: 04/25/1917
Address: House on Terçalho Freitas Road</>Dear Dr. Verruckt, I hereby declare that I disagree with the extreme approach to patients. You treat them like animals, torturing them and leaving them even more debilitated than when they entered.
There are no indications that shock treatment works with mentally impaired patients, and I think the hygienic conditions of this sanatorium and its tools are not pleasant either.
It seems to me that I was correct in my initial suspicions that you fled Austria, where you were a fugitive, and opened an institution in the interior of Brazil only to conduct experiments on human beings without any kind of verification.
I feel sorry for anyone who has the displeasure of falling into your hands in the future.
Virgulino.
