The eternity of Knowledge's infinite despair.
Paranormal Order RPG Playbook
I'm just protecting the Balance... It's so quiet now.
The Magistrate[2]
The Magistrate is the title given to the leader of the Sect of the Masks and wielder of the Relic of Knowledge. This entity, imbued with the elements of Knowledge and Fear while wearing the Despair Mask, contains immeasurable power that pursues only one goal: to protect the Balance in Reality.[3]. The meaning of protect the balance is a mystery to many who chose to get involved with the Mask, but it is undeniably known that its wielder has the ability to change practically everything on Reality, from its memories, events and happenings. Those who wear the Mask know and remember all. But to know everything is to lose everything.
The person entitled Magistrate is the only comprehensible source of the Knowledge of the Other Side in Reality, and it is frightening to hear some truths uttered by it. Some people also believe that the Despair Mask may have existed since before humans evolved.
Its first appearance in Paranormal Order was in the 8th episode of Deconjuration where, with the objective of rescuing one of its members that was imprisoned, the most recent Magistrate led an invasion of the Sect of the Masks into the Ordo Realitas Base,[4] taking D-Force to their "Shadow Dimension" before they could attack.[5] However, she was killed by Kian during the war in The Colosseum, while trying to contain him so that Team Vultures could face the Markeds of Team Kian in a fair combat.[6]
Appearance[]
The last Magistrate was a black woman with braided hair, who wore elegant long clothes, with a white T-shirt, a long fabric loose around her neck like a scarf, black gloves that covered her hands and a large black cape, which extended to her feet, having a golden collar. The Magistrate was always seen holding a cane. Like the other members of the Sect of the Masks, she had a rope around her neck, tied like a noose. Because she held the role of Magistrate, she is the wielder of the Despair Mask, a white mask with three large ridges running down from the eyes and mouth to the edge of the mask, with a slit in the shape of an inverted heart resembling a skull in the region of the nose that forms a feature of distress and despair. On the forehead of the mask, the Symbol of the Relic of Knowledge is marked.[4]
Personality[]
As the Relic of Knowledge wielder, her mind is not a single mind, not different from anyone else's mind in the sect, as they all share the same mask mind. She, along with the rest of the Sect of the Masks constantly discuss among themselves what would be the "Balance" they seek to protect. One of the few things the Magistrate does is speak for the rest of the cult, being the person who primarily acts and uses the relic's power.
It knows everything and remembers everything, but it cannot act or interfere until the Balance is disturbed. In addition, by using the Despair Mask, it has the power to hide or unexist memories in Reality, if the masks judge it necessary.[7]
Abilities[]
- Shadow Dimension: The Magistrate can distort the reality around it and transport herself to its pocket dimension in the shadows, which is an inexplicable infinite void only occupied by whispers, and can choose to take other people with her. [5]
- Mind Control: The Magistrate can make a person take actions not consistent with their true will, being able to control even their speech.[8]
- Hide Memories: Using the Relic of Knowledge's attributions, the Magistrate is able to unexist or hide any memory it wants of our Reality.[7] To those who had the memories affected, if asked, they will be confused and try to change the subject. This ability was demonstrated by causing all of the Ordo Realitas, with the exception of the Markeds, to become unable to remember the invasion that the Sect of the Masks made to the operational base.[9]
- Omnipresence: The Magistrate can make use of a "Shadow Teleport" as a means of locomotion and then transport herself to any desired location in Reality, as long as there is shadow or darkness.[10] Just its presence in the environment is enough to cause distortions in the surrounding shadows.
- Because of her Omnipresence, the Magistrate does not need to see or hear to retain the Knowledge and wisdom of all information and events in Reality at the same time, as well as all explanations and answers. Its access to information extends to Knowledge of the past, being able to remember everything that ever happened and existed. However, its only limitation are unpredictable and undefined events by the Energy Chaos, with the only example being the events of Semper Clausa,[11] as the memories of the place had been affected by The Host.[12]
- Hide location: The Magistrate has the power to camouflage a location against possible threats.[13]
- Sharing Knowledge: The Magistrate is able to share with an individual a vision of something that has already happened[14] or even information about an object, even if it's your first contact with it.[15]
- Damage Dispersion: The Magistrate is able to halve all damage made to its allies. When using this ability, it creates a golden aura and Sigils of the Other Side begin to swirl around it.[16]
- True Conjuration: Because of its absolute Knowledge of the Other Side, the Magistrate is able to use any Knowledge ritual she wants. Some examples are:
- "Levitation" Ritual to move any being or object without having physical contact.[17]
- Unexist Ritual to erase any being or object from Reality.[18]
- Rewrite Reality: The Magistrate can completely rewrite Reality, being able to change the state, position and composition of objects and beings in any way it wants, being able to create common and cursed objects[19] as well as completely recover the body and mind of an individual.[20]
- Shadow Prison: The Magistrate is able to consume a target through the shadows and imprison it inside a Knowledge sphere, where there only the two face each other and are contained inside.[21]
- Dethrone The Host: The Magistrate is the only being in Reality able to solve the Enigma of Fear to dizimate The Host, the Relic of Energy wielder.[3]
- Masks Abilities: Since the Relic of Knowledge itself is responsible for creating the masks used by members of the Sect, it's safe to say that the Magistrate can use all of the abilities shown and mentioned of them so far, namely:
- Despair Gaze: When staring at the target, the user makes them momentarily paralyzed. If the target manages to resist, it stays faded.[22]
- Shadow Portal: When using this ability, the user summons a portal through the shadows that is capable of consuming a chosen object and teleports it to their hand.[23]
Wielders[]
Celestine[]
In 67 A.D., after winning the games of Amphitruo, the surviving warrior of the Ordo Calamitas, Celestine, is ambushed along with Amphitruo by Veritus, now noticeable that he had the Wretched Semblance this whole time.[24] Cornered by this unexpected arrival, Amphitruo hands the Despair Mask to Celestine, but not before making a deal: sealing away the memories of that local so that the events could happen whenever it wants, being kept untouched or remembered by the masks.[12] After accepting such a deal, Celestine takes and wields the mask, losing her consciousness and becoming the oldest Magistrate known to date.[25] It is unknown when Celestine ceased to be the Magistrate.
Last Magistrate[]
The last Magistrate known to date, it is unknown how or when she wielded the Relic of Knowledge, nor is there any information about her past. She was the first Magistrate and Relic-bearer introduced, with her appearance taking place at the end of the 8th episode of Deconjuration, after having invaded the Ordo Realitas Base in search of Nathaniel , a member of the Sect of the Masks who had been imprisoned by Joui Jouki.[4] Between 2020 and 2021, a brief alliance of the Sect with the Ordo Realitas in the fight against the Escribes is created, until during the 11th episode of Calamity this Magistrate was killed by Kian in the The Colosseum while holding him captive so that Team Vultures could face Team Kian.[6]
Trivia[]

- The Magistrate was the first Relic wielder to physically appear in the RPG.
- The Magistrate is the only creature, in the Paranormal Order RPG Playbook, capable of causing the "Petrified" condition.
