The St. Menefreda Orphanage is a key location of Paranormal Order: Deconjuration, being one of several orphanages funded by Arnaldo Fritz to prevent the veil in place from weakening and allowing creatures of the Other Side to manifest at the site, which was destroyed during a fire in 2009.
The orphanage served as a home for many of the relevant characters in Deconjuration, such as Dante, Beatrice and several Escribes. This location is visited during the rescue mission of Elizabeth Webber and was chosen as the place where the body of Beatrice Portinari should be buried.[1][2]
The Orphanage was also the place where the Deconjuration Order was completed, with Kian managing to finally return as a Marked.
History[]
Past[]
On an unknown date the orphanage is founded serving as a home for several children, coordinated by Ronaldo Crosti and Thelma, that took care of the children until they were adopted, all this being funded mostly by donations of Arnaldo Fritz.
Orphanage Childrens[]
Gaspar and Lilian[]
On account of his fragile health, Gaspar lived in isolation until 2006,[3] the year he passes through an expensive surgery financed by Arnaldo because of an aggravation in his heart problems.[4]
After this surgery he begins to contact the other children becoming a close friend of Lilian, the two together used to spend the afternoons reading "The Divine Comedy" on a hill near the orphanage while Lilian braided his hair[5] and at one point Arnaldo nicknamed Gaspar and Lilian as Beatrice and Dante, name that the two carried with them for life. In 2006, Beatrice was adopted by Clara[6] and only finds her childhood friend years later.
Leonardo and Anthony[]
In 2005, one of these children, Leonardo Gomes, is adopted by a couple and goes to live in Canadense for about 2 months before returning to the orphanage and upon returning to the orphanage, Leonardo had become a completely different person, both physically and psychologically, as if his stay with this couple had traumatized him deeply.[7]
At the same time that Leonardo returns to the orphanage, his neighbor, Anthony Scelto, 14, is helped by Álvaro Augusto to give a "knack" to his grandparents, and so Anthony moves to the same orphanage as Leonardo.[8] And in this place Anthony continues with his games, playing tricks on the other children and caregivers of the orphanage becoming closer to Rana during this time.[9]
Henri[]
Henri becomes a close friend of Gal and together they practiced acts of rebellion during childhood, after being caught trying to escape from the orphanage both were punished severely for the first time, after that Henri began to cause problems constantly only to be punished again,[9] demonstrating this unhealthy behavior from an early age.
The Fire Night[]
In 2009, during his obsessive investigation into "Kian", Arnaldo ends up discovering the true nature of Leonardo Gomes' past, but ends up becoming The Host in the process, taking it to the orphanage to confront the receptacle of "Kian". This confrontation results in a fire caused by the power of the Relic of Energy, resulting in the supposed death of Arnaldo and some childrens, the destruction of the orphanage and the disappearance of Ronaldo and Thelma. However, Kian leaves alive, being saved by Dante who only believed he was saving his friend. And with that some of the children who lived in this place went to live in the streets, like Dante and Jasmin[10] while others remained in place and eventually became Occultists.[11]
Beatrice's Memories[]
In 2017, Beatrice returns to the destroyed orphanage guided by her curiosity, finding on site several orphans who have never left the site, living in the dark with the body covered with tattoos wearing only simple clothes, being received by Leonardo Gomes and guided to the "Deconjuration Room" by Gal, where she is tied up in a chair and has her body covered in various tattoos of horror and fear stories, being connected completely to the Other Side upon discovering a terrible truth.[12]
Elizabeth Webber's Disappearance[]
In 2020, the investigation of the disappearance of Elizabeth ends up leading a team to an abandoned and destroyed orphanage being guided by one of its former residents, Dante.[13]
Arriving there, the agentes discovered that the site was being used as a base of operation by a group of occultists, known as Escribes, and semi-dead neutral entities, the Existeds. Exploring the place, the group ends up in direct conflict with some scribes, such as José and Nergal.[14] After Anthony give them a "lesson" on the Other Side,[15] they manage to gain access to the second floor where Elizabeth was being held.
After releasing the agent, the group is forced to take an alternative route to their exit,[16] which allows the arrival of more Existeds and Escribes barring the exit from the site. After a confrontation with the agents, the leader of this sect, Gal, murders Elizabeth and arrests the rest of the agents, who are later rescued by Erin Parker and Fernando Carvalho.[17]
Beatrice's Funeral[]
After Dante uses a ritual trying to read Beatrice's mind, that had become an Existed, he understands that his partner was constantly suffering, losing hope in bringing her back, Dante realizes that he should not leave her alive, since this would be an extremely egoistic act, so he makes a request for his team: take Beatrice to a hill on top of the orphanage, where there was a tree where the two sat and read "The Divine Comedy" together.
His colleagues accept the request when they realize how much Dante was affected by the "loss" of his friend. They guide him down the tree, since after using the ritual Dante ended up losing sight, and there he begins to dig a grave for Beatrice with his own hands, being helped by his friends, ending Lillian’s suffering by firing a mercy shot in the middle of her forehead as he cries calling her his "Little Sister". Dante sits next to his sister’s makeshift grave while reciting texts from "The Divine Comedy" until sleep.
A while later, Dante returns to the Orphanage accompanied by Ivete, and sits next to where Beatrice was buried, however, her tomb was violated and her body had disappeared, and because he was without his vision, he did not notice this event.
Final Day of the Deconjuration[]
After leaving the Corridors, located below the Blue Condominium, the D-Force finds that Tim was kidnapped by Gal, being taken to the Orphanage, the agents quickly return to the base and prepare for the final confrontation. Upon arriving at the scene they find Gal, with the bodies of the former team members hanged from the courtyard tree.
Soon begins a bloody battle, where D-Force was helped by Mr. Verity, Team Spies and Aaron, who arrived in time to participate in the combat, however, by being in possession of the Vessel of Knowledge, Gal was absurdly strong, managing to murder Samantha, and force Clarissa to kill Alexia, also making Bruno dying of bleeding. Gal ends up leaving Erin Parker to the verge of death, so the agent explodes herself in the name of Chaos, creating a huge explosion that hits the Escribe in full, leaving him in a critical state of injury.
But it is revealed that Gal was just using the blood of the Members of the Order as paint to draw a huge Transcend symbol on the ground, the agent Luciano Carvalho feels an unusual call coming from the Other Side, he then answers that call and steps on the big symbol, starting his process of transcending after reaching 50% of Paranormal Exposure. However, it is revealed that Kian, the First Occultist, was hidden inside Luciano’s body, just waiting for him to increase his Paranormal Exposure, to be able to detach himself from the chains of reality and finally become a Marked.
Finally returning, now as a Marked, Kian introduces himself to everyone by offering the Calamity to those present in the place, their plan to end at once with the Paranormal, decimating all who know of its existence. Only Gal accepts his deal, and Kian then realizes that the shadows were moving strangely, understanding that the Sect of the Masks made an agreement with Joui Jouki to save the members of the Order. Kian then uses a ritual to slow down the Masks, also realizing that Kaiser had a ritual that could nullify his. The Occultist tries to convince the agent not to use it, but without thinking twice, Kaiser uses his "Cineraria" to overcome the effect of Kian’s ritual, so the Sect can save everyone but Kaiser, who stayed behind and kept his ritual active.
On the day, died: Samantha Hale, Alexia Grifo, Erin Parker, Bruno, Fernando Carvalho and Kaiser.
Ground floor[]
Entrance[]
Upon entering through the main door of the Orphanage, it seems like a completely dark place, with broken and abandoned furniture, with three possible paths, one that leads to the External Area ahead, another to a corridor on the left and a sealed door on the right that leads to the dormitories. Arriving at the site, the agents are faced with two blind occultists pushing a semi-dead entity through the corridor.[18]
Corridor[]
A long corridor that follows the front to a room at its end, continuing to the right where there is a pile of rubble that prevents the passage and a door to the left. The two occultists continue to push the entity until they arrive and enter the room at the end of the corridor.[19]
Party Room[]
Upon entering the room, they come across more of those entities along with some occultists drinking and partying while listening to loud metal music without paying much attention, with one of them standing out, a man with a goatee sitting in an armchair with a nearby scythe.
Some agents manage to enter the room before the blind Occultists notice them and start a bloody fight that results in the death of everyone present. During combat the entities did not show aggressive behavior only by approaching and facing them, but after one of them is injured, his body begins to shine and becomes agitated, violent and noisy, being quickly eliminated.[20]
Janitor's Room[]
Moving forward and entering the door to the right of the blocked corridor, the agents see a cramped room with several cabinets, boxes and more inside a bed, the Janitor’s Room. Exploring the site was found a visible gap behind one of the cabinets that when pushed, reveals a hidden passage.[21]
Info Room[]
One of the rooms next to the bathroom exit with a series of computers and notebooks old and broken covered in ash and dust by the site with the exception of a specific point, where there was a micro SD that, when being inserted into a cell phone to answer a call, burns the pixels of the screen forming an Occultist Symbol, the Host's Symbol.[22]
Chapel[]
An old chapel with some Existeds trapped in the place, with one standing out among them by floating slightly above the ground, examining the site was discovered a series of markings near the altar mentioning a series of verses that if fulfilled in order would reveal a relic from the Other Side.[23]
Infirmary[]
Next to the Chapel there is an old Infirmary with mattresses full of blood thrown on the floor and bandages around the place, when approaching this place Orpheu gets agitated, flying towards the interior of the ward while singing, landing on the shoulder of a short-haired woman, who is recognized by Beatrice as her mother with a different appearance and semblant, which disappears leaving only purple sparks behind when her daughter tries to approach.[24]
Outside Area[]
The Outside Area is an open place with a large burnt tree, benches and a playground for children next door, being located in the center of the orphanage having two entrances, one near the library and another near the main entrance of the orphanage. It was the place where Henri and other occultists awaited the arrival of the agents to propose a series of challenges so that they could move forward and rescue Elizabeth.[25]
Library[]
When opened the door next to the elevator, they see an abandoned library with books thrown and bookshelves dusty next to a strong fog on the site, with a sheet of paper with "MIRROR" written on one side and glued to a bookcase more inside.
When removed and turned reveals a ritual for Beatrice Portinari, which generates a duplicate exactly like herself passing through the door of the library that closes after their entrance, some time later a laugh echoes through the library announcing to its "students" that their "class" on the Other Side Elements would start and they could only leave the site after he finished class.
In the course of the lesson, this mysterious voice talks about four of the 5 elements, Death, Blood, Knowledge and Energy, to explain the last element he manifests itself behind a Beatrice holding a knife to her neck before slitting her throat, demonstrating one last element in practice, Fear. He vanishes, leaving two papers glued, one black and one white, on a nearby shelf, on the white sheet was the name "Anthony" in one side, and in the other a symbol and a key glued on top, and on the black paper "DISSIPATE" written in one side and a symbol in the other, being a cursed object.[26]
Elevator[]
Next to the Library is a type of antique elevator locked with a sturdy padlock, which can only be opened with the key left trapped in one of Anthony’s papers. This key was left as a gift to the "students" after completing their class in the library, opening access to the second floor.[27]
1st Floor[]
Cells[]
A new section of the second floor where the rooms of the Orphanage staff were located, a corridor with several cells containing people with mutilated bodies and covered by tattoos, being where Elizabeth Webber and Gustavo Dohmer, her apprentice were being held while both were being tattooed. Ahead in the corridor there is an opening with keys to Elizabeth’s cells and equipment. After the agents were captured by the Escribes, they were arrested in individual cells, had their equipment confiscated and remained in place for a few hours.[28]
Deconjuration Order[]
An empty room with walls covered in horror stories and just a tattoo chair in the center of the Other Side Symbol, a pentagon symbol depicting the five elements of the Other Side at their ends being them: Blood, Death, Knowledge, Energy and Fear. That was the place where the kidnapped people were taken and turned into Existeds by having their bodies covered with tattoos.
It was also the place where, inher memories, Beatrice Portinari was guided by participating in some kind of ritual completely connecting with the Other Side thus becoming an Existed, and subsequently being brought back by her mother who had joined the Escribes, performing a ritual accompanied by Leonardo Gomes.[29]
Office[]
A room with a desk with papers and a computer on top of it, plus a cupboard in the corner. On the walls there is a picture with the world map and a blackboard with no annotation. The agents found suspicious e-mails, a letter from the nun in charge of the orphanage, and a map of the 2nd floor of the site.[30]
Meeting Room[]
A room with two spaces, the first being a small living room with some tables and armchairs, and the second a meeting area with a large table and several chairs around. There is also a blackboard erased on the wall next to the table and a metal cabinet in the corner of the room. The group finds correspondences from Álvaro Augusto with a man named Virgílio scattered over the meeting table.[31]
Dormitories[]
The Dormitories occupied the right wing of the two floors of the Orphanage, being the most damaged by the flames of the fire, visiting this wing the agents found traces of the children who lived in the place, cursed objects, bodies of Existed killed by the corridors, and entities living on site as Existeds trapped in some rooms next to a residual black ooze and Existeds with inconsistent bodies formed of Energy.[32]
The Dormitories located on the first floor are similar to those on the second floor, having a destroyed appearance with bodies of Existed thrown by the site, being inhabited by only one entity, the vengeful spirit of Nina, in form of a Degolified sealed in place with a blood barrier.
Connection with Occultism[]
After the night of the fire at the orphanage, Dante loses contact with all the other residents except for Leonardo and Jasmin, but for some reason all the other residents ended up going through Occultist Rituals as Beatrice, or became Occultists as Gal and Henri. To date all children except Beatrice and Dante either died in the fire or became Escribes, having as goal the Deconjuration Order:
- Dante, Jasmin Cristal and Leonardo Gomes kept in touch after the fire and the three eventually became occultists, Jasmin was murdered, Dante was captured by members of the Ordo Realitas, being imprisoned for a few months and then released, became an agent of the organization, and Leonardo was declared dead;[33]
- Beatrice didn't become an Occultist, but eventually returned to the orphanage in 2017, seeking answers about the death of Arnaldo Fritz, where she met Leonardo Gomes and several other orphans covered in various tattoos. Gal and Leonardo guided her through the orphanage to the "Deconjuration Room", on the spot, her body was tattooed with several stories of terror and words of fear, making her connect completely to the Other Side, becoming an Existed. Clara, her adoptive mother and agent of the Order, when she found out what had happened to her daughter, surrendered and became an Escribe only to learn a ritual capable of blocking the knowledge acquired by Beatrice, erasing 11 years from her memory;[34]
- Bruno became an Escribe due to the lack of shelter and food he and many other children had after the orphanage fire.[35]
- Gal became an Ecribe who blindfolds himself and carries two entities chained to himself;[36]
- Henri, one of Gal’s closest friends, became a blood-obsessed Escribe;[37]
- Nubi, one of Nina's killers, became an Escribe linked to the element of death;[38]
- Anthony, a playful boy, became an Escribe and Scholar of the Other Side and its Entities;[39]
- Gregory became an Escribe;[40]
- Rana, a rebellious girl, became an Escribe who uses her pair of fans to conjure rituals;[41]
- Erika has become an Escribe who uses her chains to immobilize opponents in combat;[42]
- Kish became an Escribe with exceptional speed and agility.[43]

Trivia[]
- In the Revealing the Deconjuration, the chapel puzzle is showed, revealing that it would give a crystal dagger with a non-transcendable ritual. If someone cut themselves with it, a flashback containing Arnaldo Fritz and silhouettes of children would appear.[44] This flashback would reveal the moment when Arnaldo would become The Host, but as this object was not found, this was revealed only in the 6th episode of Calamity.[45]
