Not even rotten corpses, buried for many years, are free to become a shell infected by the entity.
Paranormal Order RPG Playbook
The Roottens are a kind of creature of Death that can be manifested from buried corpses near a vegetation infested by Death. The roots and the ooze fills the inside of the body, consuming it from the outside and from the inside.
They could appear in the 16th episode of The Secret in the Forest if they were summoned by The God of Death as a last resort during the final battle, reviving all the bodies from the Trial Woods and creating a chase scene between them and Team H.[1]
After, the Panacea Industries planned on using a Rootten under the codename of "Leshen" to try to destroy a primal Nidere manifestation, but it was not enough.
Appearance[]
The Roottens have a grey skeletal shape, which merges with several roots throughout their entire body. The ooze runs down the branches and some roots grow in a spiral.
Behaviour[]
When its physical body is destroyed, a Rootten will become a pool of Ooze for a short time until it partially regenerates, and may have the process disrupted when it is burned or takes some Energy damage. It is also capable of poisoning anyone who is hit by a punch from it.
Variation[]
An Awakened Rootten is a non-canon weaker version of a common Rootten, being a completely influenced version by Xilosapien, a paranormal creature originated from the death of environmental activist Jamila Duran. Its emergence comes from vineyards and roots linked to the elements of Death and Knowledge from Xilosapien, that when taking a corpse emits a small golden glow from the eyes before manifesting completely.
The awakened doesn't have a difference on its appearance from the normal one, even with the complement of Knowledge, with their different being their behavior of just attacking truly repentant people. This Rootten has a more flammable ooze than a common one, in addition to having an attack similar to Xilosapien involving mental attacks about the target’s death.[2]
Trivia[]
- The Roottens have a non-canon appearance in "Brumes of Vento Baixo", the 2nd extra mission of the Paranormal Cases of the Paranormal Order RPG Playbook, along with its exclusive official token art.
