Potential Energy

Potential Energy, commonly abbreviated to PE, and also known as "Entropy" is the name given to the set of potential moments and possibilities that could have happened but never occurred, due to the Entity of Death. Death always seems to seek the application of Potential Energy dedicated to spirals, commonly associated with the element. Each moment that an individual spends examining or contemplating one of these spirals, is also an instant that the same individual could be using to make other choices, experience other moments, perform other actions. With this, Death can strengthen itself, absorbing the Potential Energy generated by the moments spent watching one of its spirals, and the possibilities that never happened thanks to the Entity itself.

The Potential Energy was also seen being used by the Dimensions Parasite of Carpazinha's Holy Cradle. The Parasite was able of receiving large amounts of EP through the "Sources", Lusidii who lived trapped for life in a completely white cell, except for one Spiral Symbol marked in one of the walls, at Holy Cradle Cavern. Because they lived in such cells since they were born, the Sources remained all their lives observing and admiring the Spiral Symbol, generating huge amounts of PE, which was used by the Parasite to keep the city in perfect condition.

Some creatures that were manifestation from the Parasite, such as the Black Carrion, or that they were simply connected to it, like the Aracnasite, apparently could use larger amounts of PE to get stronger, in the case of the Aracnasite, which came to have an abnormal size for common spiders because of the Potential Energy extracted from Thiago Fritz.

Experiments at Carpazinha

The Potential Energy was first mentioned in Eric Jour's diary pages, being described as an essential energy for "Holy Cradle"'s triumph, project in which he and 4 other scientists experimented with the Dimensions Parasite:

Initial tests of PE radiation with the mortal remains recovered by Dr. Valter demonstrate a feedback kinda promising, but not enough for sustain the Project HC alone.
I'm still worried about the situation with that gang of vicious biker primates that we are forced to bribe. What we are making here is much bigger than those worms. We are creating the future.
But their weapons are bigger than ours. Dr. Paula is optimistic and suggested that in the future they will be useful to us, probably making the dirty work of the kidnapping of the necessary PE sources.

Valter Luz finds the mortal remains of Virgulino Batista, buried in the yard of his old house, uused by scientists as a basis for their project. However, the energy coming from remains seems not to be enough for what they needed to do and so Dr. Eric says that the Haunteds, a gang the group was bribing, could do the "dirty work" to bring the EP sources they would need, that is, people alive.

After finding Virgulino’s corpse, the scientists turn him into the Black Death Carrion, something Dr. Eric reports on another page of his diary:

Dr. Eva once more! - October 28, 2019
Praised be Dr. Eva van Gloss and her finds! I knew that her archaeological nose would bring another gift for us! Apparently she found a lost diary of the former residents. The situation with that creature in the basement was getting way worrying, I can’t sleep right in over a week. But that gives me time to calculate. Placing a shelf in front of the door helps muffle the sound.
I will check the information of Eva’s find. If what I presume that is recorded in this diary is correct, we can abandon the experiments in these remains of decrepit mortals and have a source of energy that is infinite. The Holy Cradle will prosper.

On this same page, it is said that Eva van Gloss found Lurdete Batista's diary, which is expressed by Dr. Eric as something promising, which would make them abandon the experiments in the Carrion and obtain an "infinite source of energy". It is known that the information contained in Lurdete’s diary was an account of a mind deteriorating by some kind of contact and connection with the Dimensions Parasite, this seems to be what Eric refers to. However, this was not the first time that the scientists had contact with a person affected by the Spiral Hypnosis: before the beginning of the Project Holy Cradle, it is known that Dr. Eva Van Gloss had experienced the effects of the Spiral Symbol on Ingrid Volkomenn, as she herself narrates on a tape found in the Bunker of the Holy Cradle Mines. Thus, the human guinea pigs that are used as a source of PE energy for the Parasite, are powerful and can feed it for years, but suffer permanent damage to their psychological in the process.

In another letter, where Dr. Eric seems to be obsessed with the project’s calculations, he reports that they would need to get the "sources of concentrated PE flow":

The calculations are right. Everything is right. I did. And did it again. I don’t need to sleep, I need to keep calculating. Recalculating. Again and again.
Another day calculating. Just one more. If they continue to work, it will happen. The Holy Cradle will prosper. Our Holy Cradle. We need to get the sources of concentrated PE flow tomorrow. Just another day of calculation.

It is known that such "sources of concentrated PE flow" were Alice and Camila Montes, respectively daughter and wife of Rafael Montes, the case that begins the story of The Secret in the Woods. This information is confirmed by the date when Rafael's body was found by Ivete Beicur next to the Ape Hangers bar, in November 11, 2019, one day after the page "Calculations" was written by Dr. Eric.

After this, Holy Cradle is successfully created, with all the scientists becoming connected to the Parasite and consequently abandoning their studies, but maintaining the Sources as PE sources at the Holy Cradle Cavern to strengthen the parasite, living for several generations until the arrival of Team H.
