There are memories, Beatrice, that even you can't access... memories that he's protecting.

GM[3]

Orpheu was a bird of the species Nyctibius grandis that always accompanied Beatrice Portinari. Both were trained by Tristan Monteiro and the bird was accompanying Beatrice on her first mission for the Ordo Realitas.

Appearance[]

Orpheu was a large potoo, a bird approximately 54 cm tall and 1 meter wide. Its plumage was mostly brown, with lighter tones on its body and darker on its face, resembling a mask with black eyes and a short beak.

Upon being exposed to a large Occultist Symbol in one of the rooms of the St. Menefreda Orphanage, Orpheu's body began to glow and some texts appeared all over his figure, similar to those of the Escribes and Existeds, except that, instead of horror stories and last words, they were tales mundane things.[4]

Personality[]

Orpheu was quick to get used to new environments, he felt comfortable taking off and stopping in different places. Orpheu was said to never make noises, and, according to Beatrice, she had never heard him utter any chants until the event at St. Menefreda Orphanage. Orpheu wasn't shy, and he was comfortable with people around him, although he didn't show much reaction, except with Beatrice.

Despite his attachment to Beatrice, Orpheu maintained his autonomy and did not always follow what she asked. In combat, he didn't put himself in danger, only attacking at opportune moments, which is what caused his death, defending his owner and having his neck broken by the Traveler.[5]

Skills[]

  • Natural camouflage: Due to its grayish plumage and black eyes, Orpheu had the ability to camouflage itself extremely well in dark and forested environments.
  • Magic Eye: Urutaus have large yellow eyes, which makes camouflage difficult. So, as an evolutionary trick, they developed a kind of "magic eye": a small opening in their eyelid that allows them to see even with their eyes closed.
  • Nocturnal habits: Urutaus are nocturnal birds with predatory habits. Because of this, its vision is adapted to low light, making it easier to locate targets in the middle of the night.
  • Watchman: Thanks to his vision and natural camouflage, Orpheu could be used as a great watchman, warning of the approach of any strange being in his surroundings.

Biography[]

Past and origin[]

So far, little is known about Orpheu's life before becoming the companion of Beatrice, but it is known that at some point in his adult life he was used in a ritual by Clara and Leonardo Gomes, becoming a barrier between Beatrice's devastating memories to save her from the state of Existed.

After this ritual, Orpheu was seen by Beatrice for the first time in a room, watching her.[6] Since then, the urutau always accompanied her, being trained by Tristan to join the Order with its owner.

Deconjuration[]

During the Paranormal Order: Deconjuration campaign, Orpheu accompanies Beatrice everywhere, including her missions, staying perched on her shoulder and occasionally leaving to land elsewhere or attempt to attack enemies.

On the visit to the New Dawn Building, Orpheu acted as usual, keeping close when he left Beatrice's shoulder and assisting in combat from time to time.

However, when the agents make their way to the St. Menefreda Orphanage, Orpheu acts unusually, singing for the first time and facing a door on the left side of the ground floor, when Joui opens this door, Orpheu passes by the agents and enters the room that until then group had not investigated. Everyone is apprehensive with the urutau's different behavior, entering the room slowly, Joui and Beatrice see Orpheu perched on the shoulder of a woman with short black hair from the back, described as having about forty-five and exceptionally good looking for her age, with whitish eyes. That woman is Clara, Beatrice's mother, who disappears as soon as her daughter tries to approach, leaving Orpheu flying in the air. The urutau then returns to Beatrice's shoulder, acting as if nothing had happened.[7]

On the second floor of the Orphanage, in the ritual room right next to the elevator, Orpheu starts acting strange again, becoming restless and singing, until he flies off Beatrice's shoulder and, in mid-flight, his body starts to glow and appear. several writings, until he lands on top of the chair that is right in the center of the huge symbol with the elements from the other side, continuing to sing.[8] After spending some time on top of that chair, Orpheu returns to his tutor's shoulder, still shining and uttering his song, until he returns to acting normally, still with his body illuminated and full of writing, which unlike the Existeds, are ordinary stories as if someone were telling their routine.[4] The moment Beatrice leaves the room with Orpheu on her shoulder, he stops to shine, returning to normal.

During the Sect of the Masks invasion in the Order's base, when the agents are in a trance-like state, Beatrice appears without Orpheu, indicating that just like Joui, he was not Present in this "other world".[9]

In Devilish Mansion, Orpheu spends most of his time on Beatrice's shoulder acting normally, even in risky situations or when his guardian was hiding, he remained close, only leaving his owner's shoulder to peck pieces of ramen noodles and drink water, returning to where it was after eating. After some events, the group confronts an invisible creature, which only appeared when you took a picture of it, known as Traveler. In the midst of this struggle, the creature knocks Beatrice and Orpheu down, but the urutau flies out of range,[10] keeping at a safe distance, until that the creature attacks Beatrice and leaves her on the verge of death,[11] starting to steal her memories.[12] At that moment, a barrier appears, Orpheu starts to glow and sing desperately, advancing towards the Traveler, protecting his guardian and trying to lose the creature, making it uncomfortable and sketching an aggressive expression ,[13] even after suffering blows from the other agents, the Traveler does not change his focus, he picks up Orpheu and breaks his neck, making the urutau scream desperately before falling dead to the ground beside Beatrice,[5] breaking the barrier ritual that was performed on him, releasing the memories of his guardian he had protected all this time.[14]

Trivia[]

  • Orpheu was originally supposed to be a caramel stray named Dante. However, Mestre did not allow Orpheu to be a stray due to there being already a dog in the RPG, and did not allow him to call him "Dante", since character of Rakin had the same name.

Asked by the Order's agents if Orpheu sings, Beatrice replies that, even though she was very intimate with him, she had never heard him utter any song.
  • In the 5th episode of Deconjuration he sings before Joui opens the door where Beatrice sees her mother.
  • In the 11th episode of Deconjuration, it was discovered that Orpheu has many tattoos on his body that were done by Clara (Beatrice's mother) to protect her daughter from becoming an existed.
