Morato Vertaler[1]
Morato Vertaler was a former agent of Ordo Realitas,[2] who after his expulsion created a team called The Five to deal with paranormal creatures known as Aliens.
He first appeared in the 6th episode of Signals from the Other Side, where his pupils release him from the capsule in which he was imprisoned after his abduction during his investigation into the origin of the Aliens.[3] But just in the final moments of the mission, in the 7th episode, Morato heads against the Outsider trying to protect The Five, sacrificing himself and making sure they would enter the capsules of the Tenebris' Varminho Bell, being melted in green slime for the team.[4]
Appearance[]
Morato was a black man with a tired look, having braided hair in a bun with some loose braids, hiding a scar of Knowledge in the left side of his head,[5] plus a little unshaven beard. He wore a red sash tied to his forehead, a dark grey dress shirt and a blue jacket with some red details on his shoulders, plus a military identification collar around his neck.[3]
Personality[]
Morato was described by his friends and acquaintances as an eccentric man, who acts most often seriously and paranoid, not relying too much on any kind of technology, sending his missions to his team through VHS tapes, messengers or letters, hardly sending them direct messages by technological means.[6]
After being freed in "TV Varminho", Morato proves to be really eccentric and straight to the point, wanting to know how to continue the mission and being focused on saving Dara Venturini, trying to comfort and deal with his companions in their most serious and sloppy way.
Biography[]
Past[]
Morato Vertaler was born in February 11, 1963. Little is known about your past, besides that at some point he became an agent of Ordo Realitas and that, during some of his missions, ended up being injured by a creature of Knowledge, getting a big scar on the left side of his head.[5]
Due to his interest in Occultism, he met Arnaldo Fritz and Calisto Besatt,[7] with whom he formed a kind of secret group of the Order with the aim of studying more deeply the Other Side.[8] Calisto went on to act as a paranormal consultant for Morato, collaborating with him on some of his missions, one of which helped him deal with a Memoflygian communicating with the creature through the computer and then Morato defeated it.[9]
However, after finding about his "Classified Guide",[10] Morato is eventually kicked out from the Order because they disapproved of his conspiratorial investigations of creatures on the Other Side.[2] Therefore, Morato chose to gather a group of young people he met to then create and lead his own team, later known as The Five, composed of young people he met in some missions being them Alexandre, Dara Venturini, Francisco Albuquerque, Guilherme Santos, Lírio Tellini and Voytek Nowak. This team was dedicated to tracking down and confronting a group of paranormal creatures that had a language pattern, the Aliens. With his expulsion, Arnaldo Fritz was in charge of overseeing it, but chose to maintain a secret alliance with Morato and Callisto.
Morato trained his team long enough to take them on missions, determining their roles based on their characteristics and qualities, adding them to the ID Cards they carry. However, during the first mission, the team was about to leave the sewer that they investigated as Morato had ordered because the creatures present were stronger than expected, however Voytek recklessly disobeyed and stayed behind believing they could handle it.[11] He tries to convince the others that it was the best decision, and even reluctantly, Xande agreed with Voytek after Guizo supported the decision to return and fight the creatures so he could film them. And it is then that Voytek ends up being surprised to be surrounded and attacked by several Aliens. The attention of the team turns to Voytek when they hear his cries as he is torn apart, but by Morato’s order the other members retreat so as not to risk themselves while the leader stayed behind and would try to help his ally, but it was too late and Voytek is taken by the Aliens.[12] The next day after the incident, the Five return to that location to make sure, but find no trace of creatures or Voytek’s body, only his Dog Tag in the ground. Morato is greatly impacted by the loss, constantly blaming himself for failing as a leader.
Later, The Five went through some missions defeating Aliens and having fun, sometimes even allying to the Café's Pizzaria's employees, establishment of Arnaldo frequented by Morato, that helped them set traps for monsters.[13] Until in 1997, during the course of his research on the Aliens, Morato hears about the disappearances that occurred in Varminho, a small town in the interior of southern Minas Gerais in which there were constant reports of the "Aliens", in the case of outsiders who used the region as a "nest". Guided by the most recent disappearance of the city, being Jerson da Silva,[14] a helper in the Zucchini Farm, the Magal family's farm, Morato stays at the farm as an antenist due to interference in the signal, secretly investigating the regional kidnappings and the manifestations of the Aliens.
Morato stayed a few days at the farm, taking up residence in the tree house as had been offered by the family, but using it as a base during his investigations and installing computers[15] and internals and externals security cameras. In the meantime he recorded some videos to be sent to his computer.[16] After this, the agent records a tape named "Welcome", where Morato instructed and alerted the Magal family about some things in the intention of making them avoid contact with the Aliens, among them, not to turn on the TV at 2 am or it would burn because the antenna supposedly stopped working at that time, as well as the radio if they heard strange noises, and explain the process of identification of their "subordinates" if they appeared.[17] However, it was also recorded in specific minutes more of his videos recording his advances on top of other tapes scattered around the house, such as: In the time 41:43 of the tape "The Object", Morato comments on the return of the channel TV Varminho which worked as a virus, where people do not stop watching it after they start, and also has an influence on the interference of other television and radio broadcasts;[18] In the time 06:05 of the tape "Moons' Voyage", Morato reports on the presence of a Memoflygian in the region of Varminho, in addition to the need to turn on the abandoned Broadcast Station in Varminho to continue the tracking, however, due to the complications of working alone, Morato allies with Donisvaldo Magal Benza to assist him in the further development of his research;[19] In the time 01:33:15 of the tape "Late Encounter of the Fifth Kind", Morato comments on the campers who inhabited the Broadcast Station, from whom he had made investigation files and would deliver to Donisvaldo,[20] besides also reporting his studies for the translation of the Signals,[21] however, by a mysterious interference of the Aliens, he didn't remember how he discovered the way to translate them;[22] In the time 34:25 of the tape "The 8th Guest", Morato was exhausted, speaking of the existence of unclassified Aliens, and not having memories of events and actions made by him, still having his memories affected.[23]
Later, still suffering from his memory lapses and headaches, Morato began to monitor himself with the security cameras he installed in the tree house. That’s when, on October 21, At 2:13 in the dawn, it is seen on the first internal security camera, which recorded Morato sleeping on the mattress, a silhouette approaching him, but then the camera distorts and there is nothing else.[24] At the same time, the second external camera that recorded nothing distorts, starting to record a stop black van and many Doppelgangers on black suits standing around the whole farm, until 15 seconds later everyone disappears.[25] After this event, Morato Vertaler is taken by the Aliens to the TV Varminho's Tower, where he would be kept trapped inside the capsule 4-A3, with its high parameters.[26]
About two weeks after his disappearance,[27] his Dead Man Switch is activated, sending some files of his investigation to a server that was accessed by some of his friends, such as Arnaldo Fritz, who informed Calisto Besatt.[28] However, many of these files were corrupted, leaving only a few of them, and among these files was the last video recorded by Morato who had sent to his computer, but had interference.[16]
Signals from the Other Side[]
At the dawn of October 29, 1997, Calisto Besatt meets The Five at Café's Pizzaria and informs them of the disappearance of Morato at Zucchini Farm. Until October 31, the team infiltrates the TV Varminho's Tower and locate the capsules on the fourth floor, with Francisco Albuquerque entering the password "Voytek" in Morato’s capsule and releasing it.[3] The leader of the team awakens and finally meets his disciples after months apart, since before the investigation at Zucchini Farm,[6] to then ask for a summary of the mission and the kidnapping of Dara Venturini while equipping properly with his machine gun found disassembled in a cardboard box.
While investigating the mysterious floor, they rescued Vicente Santos, an employee of Café's Pizzaria, and Jerson da Silva, both that were also inert in their respective capsules. The group then faces a Rasthropod, an Alien that could only be located from the camera of Guilherme Santos, finishing it together with some ease through knives, shots and rituals.[29] With the end of the fight, Morato locates in the analysis office the access card to the fifth floor, using it to then access it, determined to continue going up until they find and rescue Dara.
Arriving on the fifth floor, the team accompanied by Vicente and Jerson come across a labyrinthine environment with different passages and paths, only with a table and a computer distinguishing the entrance they occupied. After analyzing the device, a series of suit Doppelgangers begin to sporadically appear from the elevator to combat the invaders, However, Morato readies himself with his machine gun to keep the numerous fragile Aliens occupied while the rest of the group investigate the mysterious floor in search of a way out. After spending minutes killing the Aliens, Morato finally reunites with his team and is then guided to the exit to the elevator, rushing in after the leader of The Five destroys the VHS tape of Telepsy found by Alexandre on the TV room.[30]
Finally, arriving at the sixth and last floor, Morato realizes that the environment in which they entered was the same one who had hallucinations during his memory lapses at Zucchini Farm,[31] inciting a constant headache, but that does not stop him from moving forward with everyone. As they explore deeper into the room of the Tenebris' Varminho Bell, they find Dara trapped in one of the six capsules present and, accessing the big computer, Chico manages to make two of them open by entering their passwords. However, with the headaches of Morato, Vicente and Jerson getting worse, makes them lose control and feel the need to approach the Bell, being a consequence of the presence of the Outsider.[32] Morato regains control and orders the Five to enter the capsules to stay safe, and as a last act, the team leader uses his Blood Worm and then runs away in hatred to the creature,[33] sacrificing himself so that his pupils would gain time and survive. When close to the Outsider, without any chance to fight back, Morato is melted into green slime in front of The Five.[4]
