Looking in the mirror is a stormy vision, more and more. Your wrinkled face, a frowned-upon expression of one who is constantly in a bad mood. When did this begin? You don't even remember.

Whatever. There’s no one around you anymore.

Paranormal Order RPG: Surviving the Horror

The Melancholy is a Knowledge creature, with complements of Blood, Death and Fear. This creature aims, through its hosts, to proliferate and infect as many victims as possible, without being seen or even feeling its presence.

Once infected by the Melancholy, the victim’s routine becomes a heavy and disheartening burden. Getting out of bed is a hard challenge, every day-to-day actions seems arduous and purposeless. Even activities that used to bring pleasure, such as watching favorite movies, now reveal only flaws and disappointments. Self-criticism intensifies, reflected in a look in the mirror that brings only discomfort and a worn expression. The energy for any form of activity seems exhausted, leaving the days empty and meaningless, while the image of oneself deteriorates, marked by tattoos that seem to symbolize the emotional weight it carries.

Appearance[]

The Melancholy is conceptualized as an invisible and incorporeal creature, by which it manifests itself through evidence of paranormal spots that resemble tattoos that proliferate gradually in their victims.

Behaviour[]

Melancholy presents itself as a prolonged state of deep sadness, behaving in a similar way to an emotional parasite. Just as a parasite seeks to stay in a host organism to feed and reproduce, the Melancholy tends to proliferate like an infection, so that it aims to stay in its victims and consume their vitality and hope as it strengthens and takes root in the thoughts and feelings of its targets.

Melancholy's hosts originally have symptoms of insecurity and emotional distress. This instability eventually takes over their minds completely, polluting them with irrational ideas and, later, emotional self-harm. This lack of attachment to life itself weakens the mind of the victim to the point of completely destroying their brain, until they start to completely despise their own existence, constantly seeking to get rid of the world that lives.

Trivia[]

  • Melancholy would be originally called "Obscuro", as a tribute to Matt's homonymous project, that concerns themes and scenarios correlated to the creature.[1]
