Mateo was a secondary character with brief appearances in Initiation and The Secret in the Forest - Part 1. He was an Olympic gymnast and one of the best friends of Joui, Rodolfo, and Taka.
Mateo ended up dying after being attacked by a Dark Crawler, along with his colleagues, in the São Paulo Cemetery.
Appearance[]
Mateo was a young white man with short, voluminous light brown hair. He had dark eyes, thin eyebrows, and a slightly prominent nose. Mateo wore a 'friendship amulet,' which consisted of a bracelet with three charms, bearing the flags of Brazil, Italy, and Japan, representing the countries of origin of his friends.[1]

Past[]
Little is known about Mateo's past, other than the fact that he was born and raised in Italy, and at some point, he became an Olympic gymnast. In this athletic environment, he eventually met what would later become his best friends: Joui and Taka, two Japanese gymnasts, and Rodolfo, an Brazilian gymnast.
Initiation[]
Sometime after they met, Mateo and his friends traveled by plane to Brazil[2] to train for the Olympics, in which they would participate.
The Secret in the Forest - Part 1[]
Upon arriving, while walking to the hotel where they would stay, Mateo and his friends were approached by what they thought was a man. Deceived by this individual into entering the São Paulo Cemetery, the mysterious man revealed himself to be a Dark Crawler and brutally attacked Mateo, killing him right there before he could even think of reacting.
Trivia[]
- Mateo and his friends took a trip to Mount Fuji, which was the last vacation trip the group made together.
- Mateo had his name assigned by Joui as the nickname for one of their rituals, the Localized Aging Ritual.
- Originally, Mateo was Mexican at the beginning of The Secret in the Forest.[3] This was changed between the first and second episodes of the season, where Mateo ended up becoming Italian.[4]
