Joui Jouki is an Ordo Realitas agent who decided to adapt his methods after a traumatic first mission.
GM[1]
Do you think I'm a hero?! I'm a warrior!
Joui Jouki[2]
Joui Jouki was one of the protagonists of the series Paranormal Order, present in The Secret in the Forest, Deconjuration and Calamity.
He was an Olympic gymnast who, during a trip to Brazil with his friends, ended up suffering an attack by a Paranormal creature, being saved by Elizabeth Webber and Thiago Fritz. The two end up turning their mentors, and then Joui joins Ordo Realitas.
Joui was one of the members designated for the Carpazinha Case, making part of Team H along with his mentors. He was one of the survivors of the mission, even standing on the edge of insanity after seeing the tragic end scene of Holy Cradle.[3]
He returned in Paranormal Order: Deconjuration, having the goal of saving Elizabeth Webber who had been kidnapped by a mysterious Occultist group called Escribes. During the mission, Joui becomes the D-Force leader, however, he ends up making an agreement with the Sect of the Masks,[4] joining the group under two conditions: to stop Kian and keep his teammates safe.[5]
Joui subsequently returned in the 2nd episode of Calamity, enraged and free from the control of the Sect of the Masks after being affected by The Devil's Hatred, being responsible for murdering several Escribes at the Leone's Mansion while out of his mind.[6] He continued along with Team Vultures seeking the Relics of Calamity, being one of the Markeds on the Ordo Realitas' side.
Joui Jouki was killed by Kian during the colosseum battle, right after taunting him and being beaten to death.[7]
Appearance[]
The Secret in the Forest[]
Joui was a 23-year man, being 5.9 feet tall,[fn 2] was Japanese-Brazilian, with yellow phenotypes from East Asia, more precisely from Japan. He had short, straight hair, dark brown eyes, a fine nose and a fine face. He had a slender and athletic physique throughout his experience as a gymnast, always walking with a correct posture.[8] At first, he wore a long red shirt with a high collar. He was almost always seen wearing a bracelet containing three pendants bearing the flags of Brazil, Italy and Japan, representing the countries of origin of his closest friends: Rodolfo (Brazil), Mateo (Italy), Taka and Joui himself (both from Japan).[9]
During the battle against the Black Death Carrion, in the 6th episode of The Secret in the Forest, Joui was hit in the cheek by a shot of Cesar, while he was under control of the creature.[10] After his wounds were treated and sewn in an "X" shape, Joui had several layers of adhesives applied to his wound that would later be healed by a Green Crystal used by The Doctor.[11] When Arthur admits he had phobia of the red color, in the 7th episode, Joui removed his sweater to not bother him, getting only a black short-sleeved shirt and giving the sweater to Cesar, who wears it under other clothes.[12]
In the 10th episode, Joui wakes up under an alternative transformation of a Lusidii. In his new form, he had black eyes, black lines coming out of his eyes, gray skin and pointed ears. Joui could switch between his normal and Lusidii form whenever he wanted, making the sound "ZIUM" with his mouth.[13] In the same morning, he began to wear a clothe provided by the people of Holy Cradle: a pink leather jumpsuit with metal plates.[14]
After the events of the 14th episode, he returned to wear his short-sleeved shirt, abandoning all items of Holy Cradle.
Deconjuration[]
In Paranormal Order: Deconjuration, Joui returned with a completely different appearance, possessing a new haircut, shorter than the previous one, and predominantly black clothes, with some small details in red. He wore a mask on his face, which covers his mouth, nose and much of his scar, a black shirt with a large coat over it, black pants, still wearing his bracelet and a pair of slippers with socks instead of a conventional sneakers. He had some pink ribbons hanging on his waist, an quiver on his back, where he keeps his arrows, and a black sheath.[15]
During the investigation at the Devilish Mansion, Joui acquired some new scars, having his chest pierced near his heart after being shot by a "Devoured" in the 14th episode of Deconjuration during the battle against The Lurker.[16] Dante partially accelerates the healing of this wound generating a spiral mark on his chest.[17] And in the 16th episode of Deconjuration, he got careless and was pierced multiple times in the belly by the exposed ribs of a Listened.[18]
During the events of the 17th episode of Deconjuration, it turns out that Joui had made a deal with the Sect of the Masks,[4] and in that, he abandoned the team to keep them safe.[5] With this in mind, Joui ends up leaving all his belongings to Kaiser, keeping only his katana and his costume.[19][fn 3] He also ended up getting a black mask with red details, similar to his outfit, which covers his entire face, only having his eyes open, which are overshadowed by a white detail. Inside this mask was marked the same symbol that is on the forehead of the Despair Mask, and this object was responsible for making Joui’s body an empty shell, completely losing control of his thoughts and actions, becoming one with the collective mind of the Masks.[20]
Calamity[]
After about a year under the control of the Sect of the Masks, Joui reappeared in the 2nd episode of Calamity, murdering and wounding brutally diverse Escribes.[6] Still possessing his mask, he wore a cape of the same color as his costume, a hood with red accents at the tips, which goes up to the height of his feet. He wore a kind of Tangzhuang (a traditional Chinese shirt) fastened by buttons that extend to the height of the collar, plus a gray pants, free finger gloves and slippers with socks. Like other members of the Sect of the Masks, he had a rope with a noose tied around his neck, and a red one tied around his waist.
Joui, who was no longer under direct control of the Sect of the Masks, had the ability to remove his mask freely, presenting himself behind his hood with a shaved hair on the sides and larger on top, that splits in the middle of your head and falls sideways with several strands, plus a thin beard. When without the mask, he appeared not to be able to use the same powers that it provided.
After the events of the 9th episode of Calamity, Joui received a new katana, after his old sword became the Relic of Energy,[21] therefore gaining another sheath to hold your newest weapon.[22] In addition, his former sheath was filled with purple Sigils of Knowledge that contained the power of the relic. Joui chose to deliver his mask to The Magistrate in order to know what happened during the last year in which he was acting as a member of the Sect, thus losing it permanently.[23]
Personality[]
The Secret in the Forest[]
Joui showed a very cheerful and silly personality, always trying to see the good side of things, being very friendly, and always being willing to do anything to protect the one he loves. However this was a "mask" created by Joui, who believed he was able to replace the horrors he witnessed acting as if nothing bad had really happened.[24]
Joui was very brave and loyal, always offering to go ahead during the mission, as he felt he needed to be proud of who he loved, was extremely honest, refusing to lie at various times, on the grounds that there is always a better solution. As an apprentice, he always wanted to be efficient for Liz and Thiago. Despite this, due to the many events during the season, Joui was losing his cheerful personality, becoming more closed and melancholy, to the point of stating that he "should have died long ago".[25]
Deconjuration[]
After being gone for a while, Joui became much more serious in accepting the context of his new life, determined to kill as much occultists that he could. He didn't rest during the fights, even extremely wounded, always advancing endlessly against his enemies.[26] Joui was being much more confident and constantly stressed or nervous, often losing his mind, yelling at people and showing himself to be an extremely cold person at certain times, his more objective and protective personality made him a great leader for his team. Despite being more serious, his love for his friends never disappeared, constantly showing concern for them, being able to join up a Sect to protect them.
Calamity[]
Upon returning from the agreement of the Sect of the Masks, Joui appeared to totally lose his feelings and worries, taken by a feeling of revenge and endless hatred, showing great resentment towards the Escribes and no empathy, killing your enemies without showing reaction.[27]
Joui, after freeing himself from a strange fury that consumed him and meeting Arthur and Dante again, joined by the rest of the Team Vultures, showed a great deal of confusion when he realized that almost a year had passed since, for the young man, only one day had passed.[28] Joui, then, shows that he was even more worried and protective, but still, very confused and vindictive. After handing over his mask to the Magistrate, where he regains his memories, he calms down, managing to stay more centered, to the point of even refusing to fight Kian’s Markeds in order to defeat him.[29]
Skills[]
- Gymnast: Because he was an Olympic gymnast, he had a very flexible body and, in addition, as an acrobat, he could perform maneuvers, jumps, calamities and is trained in Japanese martial arts. This skill was disadvantaged from Deconjuration onwards.
- Agility: One of Joui’s main advantages was his agility, being able to run many meters without getting tired because of his experience as an Olympic athlete, which made him extremely agile in various situations. This skill was disadvantaged from Deconjuration onwards on account of Joui leaving from training his agility to begin training his physical strength.
- Soothing Exercises: Joui practiced many techniques and exercises to improve his emotional state, such as his breathing exercise and his meditation that he does every night to always be mentally renewed for new missions.
- Swordsman: During the time interval between The Secret in the Forest and Deconjuration, Joui underwent training, aiming to improve his skills as a swordsman developed in Holy Cradle, thus making his katana, his main fighting weapon.
- Archer: Joui had an obsession with firearms, much admiring the damage they can cause. However, in the interval between Carpazinha's Case and the Deconjuration case, the character begins to use a bow as a weapon, as part of his treatment to avoid his contact with firearms. This skill was disadvantaged in Calamity.
Biography[]
Past[]
Joui Jouki was born in November 17, 1996,[30] in Tokyo, Japan, from a Japanese man and a Brazilian woman of unknown names. Since childhood Joui liked gymnastics in general and ended up following this career, having great aptitude for athletics and evolving to compete in national and international events, where he won several medals. He traveled the world through sports, meeting and making friends with several people. His parents, however, never supported him in his career choice, considering his lifestyle a break with the ancient traditions of his country.[31]
On a trip to Brazil to train with his three best friends - Rodolfo, Taka and Mateo - the group was attacked by a supernatural creature, while they were near the São Paulo Cemetery. Only Joui survived, after being saved by Elizabeth Webber and Thiago Fritz, for which he developed an eternal gratitude. With the only ones he was close to dead, he decided to dedicate his life to helping the cause of Liz and Thiago, and motivated by not wanting others to go through what he went through, Joui is trained by the two, and thus, joins Ordo Realitas.
The Secret in the Forest[]
After completing his training, Joui is assigned his first mission with Team H, that has as members his two mentors, Elizabeth Webber and Thiago Fritz, and two other new agents, Cesar Oliveira, Cristopher Cohen and later Arthur Cervero. They were sent to investigate the disappearance of a team of the Order, Team Kelvin, who disappeared while investigating the death of Rafael Montes, found with a Spiral Symbol marked on his forehead, in a town called Carpazinha, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul. Being a little shy, but very cheerful, Joui displays his gymnastic skills, and slowly matures with the losses and traumas of the mission.
Timeskip[]
With the destruction of Holy Cradle and the sacrifice of Thiago Fritz, Joui undergoes months of training to learn how to use a bow and arrow and hone his blade skills in an attempt to lessen his obsession with firearms acquired in the previous mission. At some point, Joui ends up confronting and arresting Nathaniel, an Occultist related with the Sect of the Masks,[32] through unknown circumstances.[33] Before the events of Deconjuration, Joui was watching the New Dawn Building to ensure Elizabeth Webber's safety, without her knowing, while she investigated further on the Deconjuration.[34] Even always busy, he still visits Arthur, Kaiser and Ivete, people that he considers his family.
Deconjuration[]
After Elizabeth and her partner Gustavo Dohmer went missing, a team of agents entered the New Dawn Building, investigating for clues linked to the veteran’s disappearance. However, they were ambushed by a group of occultists operating there, but they were surprised at the arrival of Joui, who arrived in time to kill the first before he reached his friends. Knowing that there was more coming, he reunites with Arthur, Kaiser and the rest of the team team, seeing also the newcomer, Beatrice Portinari, and her potoo, Orpheu. After a battle with a group of occultists and Blood Zombies, he and the team start exploring the apartment. Opening a door, Beatrice is cornered by a Beastly Blood Zombie, but Tristan throws himself to protect her and burns himself together with the monster. The team continues searching, until they decide to go to the building’s garage. After fighting the syndic Sidney, the group finds clues that indicate they should go to the St. Menefreda Orphanage.
Returning to the Ordo Realitas Base, they discover that an occultist arrested by Erin and Tristan, responsible for joining Fernando and Luciano Carvalho in the same body, and childhood friend of Beatrice, since they grew up at the Orphanage, was being held in the prison of the Order’s base. Upon visiting him, the team decides to take him to the orphanage, because he knows the location. Arriving there, the group faces Escribes and creatures and finally find Liz and Gustavo locked in cells upstairs.
In an attempt to escape, the team is cornered by Gal and several other Escribes. Being too weak before their enemies, Gal uses a Mind Control Ritual on Joui, making him deliver his katana and killing Liz in front of everyone, who were paralyzed due to a Paralysis Ritual from Rana.[35] Joui swears that Gal would know death before being taken with the others back to the orphanage cells.
After some time, Erin and Fernando arrive and rescue them. At the base of the Order, the agents talk to Mr. Verity about the mission. Joui has a private conversation with the leader, venting to him about his sense of helplessness during the murder of his mentor and maternal figure. Verity comforts him and asks him to channel the hatred he felt and use it to destroy the occultists. After going to the cemetery to make their last tributes to Liz, the team goes back to the base and decides the next destination: the Devilish Mansion. However, the base begins to be invaded by the Sect of the Masks.[36] The occultists separate Joui from the group and make an agreement with him regarding to protecting his friends, preventing Kian and the Calamity. Joui takes the deal and keeps it a secret.
The next morning the group heads to Canadense towards the Devilish Mansion. In the place, the group discovers various information about Leonardo Gomes, the house's past and Daniel Hartmann. The team faces many very strong creatures, such as the Traveler who beheads Tristan in front of them. After this event, the team flees and the Japanese is completely broken, having a kind of surge of madness, believing that they were weak and unable to deal with that creature. Dante then convinces him that the group is completely broken and that they would need a leader, and from this moment on, Joui Jouki takes on the role of leader of the team. The group then returns to the mansion and deals once again with the Traveler,[37] that ends up turning Beatrice into an Existed after killing her potoo, and the Lurker, that badly injures Joui, Luciano, Ivete, Arthur and Kaiser. All the battles make him increasingly angry and more hateful of the paranormal and the Escribes, causing him to swear to Kaiser that he will kill each of them.
At a certain time between the 15th and 17th episode, Joui writes a farewell letter to Kaiser, knowing that he would soon be taken by the Sect. He cries while writing the letter and trusts his friend to take the lead and protect the team. He vents saying he is afraid and regrets not being able to make the cake he had promised. Joui places the letter under the keyboard of his friend’s desk in the research room. And at the end of the mansion’s exploration, the Masks begin to observe Joui, warning him of the beginning of the agreement.
After talking to the former resident of the mansion, Frederico Mare, in order to have more clues about Kian, Joui asks to go to the cemetery where the tombs of Thiago and Liz were. He kneels in front of the tombs, and gives his backpack with all his things to Kaiser, removing a mask from it and keeping the katana. Without understanding anything, the agents perceive the shadows of the place distorting, forming the members of the Sect of the Masks with Nathaniel. Joui reveals the deal with the occultist group, surrendering to them to protect his friends.[5] He says goodbye to each one, tearing tears from the agents, and the sect says that with this sacrifice of the Japanese, Kian will be defeated. He puts on the mask and joins the group, disappearing into the shadows with them.
In the 18th episode, Kaiser finds the letter Joui wrote, and as he reads, he is moved by his friend’s words. The letter makes Kaiser feel motivated, despite everything, and eventually the words reach the entire team.
Joui is seen again using the mask in the 20th episode of Deconjuration, where he and the Sect show up to save the group of agents at the Orphanage. Despite the young man appearing physically in front of Kaiser and Arthur, he does not outline any kind of reaction to any call from his friends. After Kaiser’s sacrifice, he is seen at the base of the Order along with the Sect, Arthur, Dante and Verity. Arthur desperately asks him to come back for Kaiser, even removing the mask from his face. Joui, however, remains unresponsive, his face empty and without any expression as his friend shook him in tears asking for something to be done.
Timeskip[]
After the events of Deconjuration, Joui remained allied and controlled by the Sect of the Masks, due to his agreement with the occultist group, seeking to maintain the Balance and always assisting in the protection of the survivors of the Ordo Realitas.
Calamity[]
Approximately one year after becoming a member of the Sect of the Masks, Joui Jouki, conscious, appears at the gardens of the Leone's Mansion over the Symbol of the Devil's Pact. He wakes up completely enraged, and keeps entering the mansion after seeing some Escribes around it. Upon arriving at the location, Joui begins murdering all the members of the group he meets on his way.[6]
When interacting with the occultists, Joui demonstrates not knowing that Kian is in Luciano’s body, even asking him in a hostile way what he was doing there, since he does not remember what happened since he put on the mask, including Luciano’s transformation into Kian and the deaths of his teammates. However, Joui remembers very well the events at the Orphanage the day Elizabeth died, and kills as many Escribes in search of revenge. Kian is quickly removed from the site by an Unknown Occultist, stating that it was not possible for Joui to act while the Masks' agreement was active. Joui then battle with the rest, tearing off the left arm of Gal,[38] severely injuring T-Bag and destroying many other Escribes. Finally, Kian’s markeds escape through the portal that Rana created while the woman stays behind. She is immobilized by Joui, who holds her by the neck while asking her for information about where they were going. Rana says that "Kian knows" and that "they're going for the Calamity". The young man then finishes her, butchering the woman’s body while screaming that he will go to hell to kill everyone, one by one.[39]
After the brutality at the Leone's Mansion, Joui, bewildered, finds only loose information indicating the Colosseum and then decides to go there. When he arrives, he finally begins to realize where he is and puts his hand on his shoulder where the symbol of Kaiser's Ritual was marked. He whispers that he was in the Colosseum and that he was afraid, in the intention that Kaiser could hear him. After encountering some occultists from the Host, Joui encounters Arthur and Dante along with three other agents. The two, surprised and relieved that Joui is well, tell him that almost a year has passed since Joui put on the mask. Joui becomes extremely anxious and wonders where Kaiser was. Arthur tells him that Kaiser has disappeared since the confrontation with Kian. Joui is shocked, but decides to follow the team through the Colosseum. Rubens, Balu and Carina present themselves and the group connects the points about him being the one who appeared in the mansion at the end of the camera recordings, being a gift from the Devil.
The group continues through the Colosseum searching for the governors' masks to solve the puzzle and open the door of the ruins. Joui by all this time is clearly anxious, panting and hyperventilating, trying to process everything that was happening. As they make their way into the ruins, Joui finds himself face-to-face with the Sect of the Masks and questions them about what had happened to their agreement. The sect says that the agreement had been broken and that nothing could be done about it. They disappear and Joui becomes even more frustrated and confused. The Order and Verity appear and the leader, relieved with Joui's returnal, questions of whether he was still willing to fight on their side. Joui without blinking says he would always be. Thus, Joui officially returns as an Order agent and groups with Team Vultures.
The Vultures, now with their new member, enter the ruins and end up isolated from the rest of the Order. Down the stairs, they find a hall with doors marked with the Host's Symbol. Following the ruins, they come across a large hall with statues of people with their names and titles written below. Joui decides to touch the statue of Celestine, the Rebel, and faints as soon as he does. Everyone decides to do the same to try to help him in the possible psychological environment that he may be. So each team member touches one and everyone faints.
They wake up at A.D. 67, at the Ordo Calamitas' base and within the bodies of their respective persons of the statues, however, only after a while do their consciences realize who they are. Joui is frightened by his amalgamated condition and becomes very nervous and lost in the situation. Suddenly, a Death attack begins and everyone rushes to the room where the newly conquered Relic of Energy was. The six members of the Vultures gather around it as if by a paranormal call. The Relic chooses Gaius, the man to whom Carina was amalgamated, and then he becomes Amphitruo. After a confusing and awkward conversation, the group returns to their normal bodies in the present time. The group begins to discuss how to proceed when they hear a door open. Balu goes to check and when the rest arrives, he explains that it looked like a kind of energy barrier with a space for two Marks. In this, Balu and Rubens volunteer to enter and thus the two return to the bodies of Faustus and Amalia to play the Host's game.
The rest of the vultures wait for Balu and Rubens to wake up after the game. When this happens, the two explain what had happened within the Host’s game. At the end of this conversation, the group decides to go to the library. In this place, all the pages of the books became the same page about the Relic of Blood. The team then deduces that with each game a page about the relic would be revealed. On the room, Joui also decides to tell everything he remembers about his deal. He tells that Nathaniel made a deal with the Sect that included as condition Joui joining the Sect along with him. In addition, he tells the reasons why Ivete was taken hostage in the invasion of the sect in the Order and clarifies that the masks would not hurt her. After hearing Joui’s reports, the group notices an energy barrier, this time with room for five Marks. Everyone but Carina joins the second game.
In this game, the Vultures return to the bodies of their respective statues. Joui barely manages to control Celestine’s actions during the game. Dante, at the end of the game, manages to take control and makes Remus sacrifice together with the emperor Nero to save the others. Everyone wakes up after the game, with the exception of Dante, who is passed out and has a weak heartbeat. The team, after trying to wake him up unsuccessfully, decides to let Carina take care of him while they finish the Host’s games. Then, with Balu carrying Dante carefully in his arms, they head to the next room, which had a barrier with room for four Marks. Balu leaves Dante resting on Carina’s lap and thus they enter another game.
In this game, only Joui and Rubens leave awake, as both Balu and Arthur have had their amalgamates sacrificed. They comfort Carina and entrust the bodies to her as they go to the last game. The two enter the last game of the Host. In it, Joui manages to control Celestine and asks Rubens to let him himself return to help Carina. Rubens trusts him and Joui promises to save him. Thus, only Joui returns. After that, creatures begin to come out of the statues of the Ordo warriors who were sacrificed, and as soon as this happens, Rubens and the others wake up for combat. They face the Unforgotten Wraiths of Faustus, Amalia, Remus and Marius. As the battle ends, a door opens and a room with a big symbol of transcending reveals itself on the floor. Dante feels called and decides to transcend while the group waits. Dante begins to transcend and another door opens revealing a passage. The group discusses whether they should leave Dante alone, but Arthur comes to the verdict that Dante would be fine alone and that they should follow. Once below, there was a corridor with a large door that opens slowly, revealing the Host sitting on a throne next to the Devil.
Joui, recognizing the entity as Arnaldo Fritz, tells him that Thiago, his son, would be ashamed and the Host only responds with indifference. Then the Host, the Devil and the Markeds begin to talk. The two wielders tried to convince the team to join them to defeat the Knowledge, stating that if the Masks and Kian were destroyed, Knowledge would no longer have ties to Reality and no more people like Kian would arise. To demonstrate the kind of power the Markeds would acquire after defeating the Knowledge, the Host shows the scene of Kian betraying Gal and then Clarissa appearing and torturing Gal. The Host left it up to them to decide whether or not to save Gal from Clarissa. The Vultures begin to argue, with Carina and Joui defending not saving him and Dante and Arthur defending saving him. Joui argues seriously with Dante and Arthur, stating that Gal was dealing with his injustice and that he was no hero, just a warrior. Arthur refuts Joui, saying that the more people against Kian, the better for their side. Joui angrily says that Gal would never fight alongside him, recalling the moments of helplessness at the Orphanage when the man had killed Liz in front of his eyes. During the discussion, Rubens and Balu become quieter, however, Balu makes clear his disappointment with the young people having their hearts filled with hatred so young. Finally, Joui holds Dante who was going over the button, however, Arthur notices a gap and presses the button, saving Gal. Joui is extremely disappointed with Arthur, saying that Verity had made a mistake in placing him as leader.
After that, the conversation about the destruction of Knowledge returns, however, the Sect of the Masks appears and also participates in the debate. After analyzing everything that has happened so far, the Team Vultures decides to ally themselves with the Masks, as they only defend the removal of the Relic of Energy from its current wielder, not the complete destruction of it. Joui, in his choice, takes into account the fact that the Devil disrupted his agreement by pure selfishness, in search of another pawn. Moreover, Joui believed that the Host was only using them to get rid of the Knowledge and thus take control and cause more chaos. Thus, the team’s choice is made and a battle against the wielder of the Relic of Energy begins.
At the main hall of Ordo Calamitas, Team Vultures, with the help of members of the Sect of the Masks, face the five representations of the Hosts who ruled the Colosseum. The battle is intense and all agents are badly injured, especially Arthur, and all members of the Sect are killed. When they defeat the variations, an energy sphere appears in the center of the hall, however, the Magistrate appears and says that this was not the true relic. In this, the group discovers that the Magistrate held the Host during the first part of the fight and now the real battle would begin. With the Magistrate protecting them, the Vultures face off against the Host of Arnold Fritz, having an extremely turbulent and dangerous battle. Arthur decides to use the Uncontrollable Rage Ritual on Joui, who gets extremely angry and attacks the Host wildly. It was also his blow that finished the Host, tearing his head off and slicing the gas mask. With this, the relic of energy ends up assimilating the sword of Joui, thus acquiring the first relic of the team.[21] After this, the battle ends and everyone turns their attention to Balu on the ground, who was badly wounded and almost died twice. Dante tries to do something, but fails. Rubens then resurrects the man with heart massage and manages, at the last moment, to save him.
After the intense battle, the relic is contained in Joui’s katana. The Magistrate then creates a special sheath for Joui to contain. Balu regains consciousness and Dante along with Rubens, takes care of his injuries. Joui approaches worried and, seeing the state of Balu, begins to have an anxiety crisis, blaming himself for not being able to help his ally and recognizing that he had even abandoned everyone by putting on the mask. He cries and hyperventilates while saying that Kaiser, Erin and his other allies were no longer there because of his abandonment. Arthur tries to comfort him by saying that this was not true and that Joui had saved him and saved many others with his sacrifice. The Magistrate reveals that Kaiser had chosen his own destiny and that because he was a Markede, his decision superseded Joui’s agreement. She further says that if Joui wanted to remember the last year he would have to return the mask. Saying this, she starts walking to a room in the ruins and says that the team would be rewarded. Joui decides to return the mask in exchange for his memories. Then, as soon as the mask is disintegrated by the Magistrate, Joui has flashes of all the events of the final day of the Deconjuration. He sees Kaiser disappearing into thin air, Arthur beating his chest begging him to do something, the other Order agents desolate and wounded after the battle. Also, he remembers that Nathaniel had left the Sect as soon as he entered for some reason; he remembers observing the last year of the Order looking for Kian’s crumbs. He was part of the Balance that asked to give tips to the agents, despite being vetoed by Knowledge. After this wave of memories, Joui falls unconscious. Dante and the group go to him and carry him along as they head to the room the Magistrate was in.
Joui wakes up much calmer and the group talks about past events and clarify some points for Balu, Carina and Rubens, especially. Upon finally arriving in the room, the Vultures come across five mirrors, with four of them ornamented with the theme of one element and the last of them just floating. Dante puts his hand inside the mirror of Death and feels something inside. Balu, inconsequential, sticks his head in to see what was there. However, he ends up getting full of hatred after looking inside and the group had to calm him down before he went crazy for good. Dante then punches Balu and manages to calm him down. Balu apologizes and steps away from the mirrors for the others to look. Joui stood all the time in readiness with his hand on the sword expecting the worst, but he disarms after seeing that everything was fine. Before going to see the mirrors, Joui tells Balu that he had also been lost in his first mission that involved the paranormal and calmed down and advised Balu, telling him to stay away from mirrors and masks mainly. Thus, Joui approaches the mirrors and the Vultures remove objects from inside them. Arthur takes a pulsating human heart from the Blood mirror, Dante takes a skull full of ooze from the Death mirror, Carina takes a scroll from the Knowledge mirror, Rubens takes Arnaldo Fritz's watch from the Energy mirror and finally, Joui takes the last page of the Grimoire inside the floating mirror. After that, the vultures decide to rest.
While Arthur, Carina and Rubens transcended, Dante looked for a way out and Balu was resting, Joui meditated and watched the video that Kaiser left before he died. Joui sees the recording on Arthur’s phone and gets emotional to remember the moments they shared together, as when Joui went to their house and cooked and everyone was amused by Joui’s attempts in the kitchen. Joui cries and opens a sad smile when he thinks of his brother, and claims that he was really an angel of the night. After a while, Dante returns with Verity and some other agents. Verity seems agitated and asks Joui where Arthur was. Joui explains that Arthur was transcending and then begins to tell Verity what had happened inside. When Joui mentions about choosing to save Gal and that Arthur and Dante agreed to save him, Verity approaches Dante and tells him that they chose right. He says that Gal would never fight alongside the Order, but that one more soldier in the battle against Kian is what they need to do to win. Arthur, Rubens, and Carina join the discussion and they begin to debate about Clarissa’s possible betrayal. Verity seems to be very shaken and says that they need to go towards where she and the Metallic Dragons went. Before they follow the path, Verity asks everyone how long they spent inside, they reply that it seemed to have been at least three hours since they entered. He is surprised and says that only half an hour has passed outside, causing him to relate the place to the effects of the Death element, as well as an old case that Joui and Arthur participated in. Dante asks Joui about the case and he replies that he was referring to the case of Holy Cradle.
After hearing about Holy Cradle, Dante begins to get very agitated and with heavy breathing. Joui asks him what was happening and Dante begins to question Joui repeatedly about what they faced in that place. Joui explains that they faced a monster that resembled the black silhouette that chased them in A.D. 67. In addition, he talks about how the citizens of Holy Cradle resembled Dante when he opened his eyes. Completely shocked and nervous, Dante says he has been to Holy Cradle before. He then tells the group that he went to Carpazinha to investigate the town after Arthur’s reports and was frightened by the presence that was in the forest. Dante says they would not be able to face what was inside. Verity raises his voice and encourages him, saying that the fact that they defeated an entity was already the necessary proof of their strength and ability. After all the discussion, the team decides to meet Verity upstairs to go after Clarissa. Before Verity went up, Joui told him about his sword that the Magistrate had given him and also said that the sword that Verity had given him now contained the Relic of Energy. Verity is surprised and suddenly questions Joui if he had any marked symbol on him as well. Joui is confused and says no and Verity just disregards and follows the ruins. Then, Joui and Arthur realize that Dante still stayed a little behind and decide to go comfort him. Dante, a little calmer, says that he had gone through the tombs of the Scoundrel Vultures and found them completely open. This information is a shock to Arthur and Joui. After these revelations, Dante asks Joui and Arthur if the sacrifices they made were really worth it. The two respond that any life saved by their sacrifices made everything worthwhile.
After going up with Carina, everyone leaves the ruins to meet Verity and the other agents. Reunited, then, they follow in the direction that Clarissa’s group had gone in order to find her and the Metallic Dragons, one of the most experienced teams of the Order. The group arrives at a large chapel with a red and macabre aspect with a large throne on the altar. Upon entering the site, everyone comes across the bodies of the Metallic Dragons completely destroyed. Verity searches for Clarissa, but only finds Tristan’s jacket, which she was wearing, lying on the floor. Everyone begins to realize that Verity’s semblance seems to finally crumble and Balu approaches to comfort him. Verity hugs him and questions what he had done wrong so that it would end this way. Balu’s words seem to comfort him and Verity tells him that this would be his last battle. Joui realizes that Arthur is tense and uncomfortable seeing the dead Dragons and tries to comfort him with a hug. Arthur seems cold and expressionless, but thanks his friend for his concern.
Dante approaches the place where he saw Gal being tortured and observes a trail of blood leading to one of the windows of the chapel, which seemed to have had a blood slit open inside it. The team then thinks about the possibility that Clarissa was taken by the Devil. Verity interrupts him saying that this was no longer Clarissa and that she had become one of the monsters the Order faces. With a serious look, he tells everyone that it would be inadmissible for them to take the path of hatred like Clarissa. The leader leaves and the whole team begins to follow him. On the return, Joui realizes that Dante also approaches Arthur and the two comfort the friend. With the three of them together, Dante says that he often feels that at some point he can stop being who he is, the only thing that separates him from that is a wrong decision, and then he asks what Arthur and Joui think about it. Joui says that as long as they have each other, they would not make wrong decisions and Arthur reinforces Joui’s words.
Finally returning to the surface, Dante and Arthur’s cell phone begins to vibrate and they realize that there were several missed calls and messages from Agatha. Dante realizes that Agatha had seen some Escribes entering the coliseum. He turns to the group and says that Agatha was in danger. At the same moment, Ivete calls Arthur and says that the Leone's Mansion was being attacked by the Escribes. Verity then decides to separate the Vultures into two teams to take care of both problems simultaneously. He asks Joui to stay in the Colosseum, as they needed the relic to defeat Kian. Joui is unsure of Arthur’s decision to leave, but obeys the orders. The two teams split up with Arthur, Rubens, and Balu going to the Mansion, while Joui, Carina, and Dante stay at the Colosseum with Verity to search for Agatha.
Verity speaks to the Order, saying that they would take the first step and defeat Kian at once. He turns to Joui and says his heart was his greatest weapon and his greatest source of strength. The Magistrate appears and warns them about the lack of balance of that battle and says that everyone would be annihilated. Verity gets angry with the Magistrate and insists on following his plan. Joui then tells her that balance didn’t matter at all and that they would manage to defeat Kian in the same way. Verity asks that the vultures then rescue Agatha and find the Grimoire. A war breaks out in the Colosseum and the three walk around the Colosseum in search of the girl. They finally find her being held by Kian, who was accompanied by three other figures Joui had seen before. Kian attempts to attack Agatha, but a shot from the upper deck from Aaron deflects the blow and Agatha is grazed. Kian then presents his Markeds to them and picks up the Grimoire that Agatha dropped upon falling. In the middle of the argument, the Magistrate appears and says she will hold him as long as she can.
A battle between the markeds begins and Joui is the first to try to convince them to help them defeat Kian. They say they want to destroy the Devil, just like the Lukic brothers and claim Kian’s betrayal of Gal. The three Escribes believe in the agents and,[40] after the Magistrate is defeated by Kian, he faces six markeds against him. Verity jumps from upstairs and approaches Kian, claiming to know something that no one else knew. Verity looks him in the eye and says he finally wants to know the truth. He then asks Kian to kill him. Kian is shocked to realize that he cannot kill him for some reason and then Verity orders the agents, who act together. Joui hits Kian’s arm holding the Grimoire, and as he releases it, Carina skids past and grabs it. Joui hands Carina the page he had found, and as Carina puts it in the book, she screams in agony and her eyes turn white for a moment. As Kian comes out of the trance, he notices what was happening and eventually also screams and his eyes turn white as his tattoos blink. After that, Kian finds himself unable to use rituals again.
Enraged, Kian turns on the agents, beating them with sheer physical force. He kills Boris and severely injures Damir. Verity also receives blows, but he doesn't die. Joui begins to say that Kian would fall and that he was just someone who couldn’t handle his own life. Kian begins to go after Joui, who finds himself clutching at him. Kian seems desperate and enraged and goes on to say that Joui would regret challenging him. He also says that Joui was too childish to realize the magnitude of his suffering in Reality. Joui continues to intimidate him, saying he could have childish eyes but that even he could perceive the despair in his eyes. Kian, even with his tattoos fading, continues to spank Joui. The several direct blows are too much for Joui that, with each punch, begins to lose more consciousness. Joui, already in the last moments of life, has visions with an older man, an adult woman and a younger one, moving away from them and when looking again notices the younger woman looking at him and crying a tear. In the last moments of consciousness, Joui Jouki says "ど も 終わります", meaning "It's over" in japanese. Kian continues to punch Joui’s dead body in frustration and at that moment, Arthur is seen looking at the whole scene of Joui being brutally murdered by Kian.[7]

Joui Jouki[41]
After the Order defeats Kian, Arthur goes to his friend’s body, kisses his forehead and tells him that now he can rest in peace. As they prepare to leave the Colosseum, after gathering the bodies of all who died in combat, Dante turns them all into dust to prevent them from turning into Blood Zombies, leaving only Joui’s swords. As an act of respect Balu asks for Carina’s canteen and puts Joui’s ashes inside it and delivers it to Arthur.
After a few days in Brazil, Verity provides a funeral not only for Joui, but also for Kaiser. The burial takes place in the same cemetery where Joui’s first encounter with Liz and Thiago took place. His grave is next to his "brother's" and his "mother's", with each of the agents thanking for their fights. In his farewell moment, Arthur thanks for all of them having been his hope and starts putting a coin and a bottom of the vultures in each of the tombs, saying he hopes they’re resting up there. Ivete also thanks Joui and Kaiser for putting a smile on Arthur’s face, something she has not seen since the death of his brother, Henrique. She also states that she will miss their fights for video games, the running around the house, and how they have always been true to each other, how they loved each other and that their memories will never be forgotten, because they will always be with them.
Quirks and Phobias[]
Tetraphobia: Aversion to the number 4. A common phobia in East Asia, explained by the fact of the kanji of the number 4 (四) and the kanji of the word Death (死) being pronounced in the same way, “Shi”. Joui already had the phobia before The Secret in the Forest.[42]
Aracnophobia: Irrational fear of spiders. Contracted, as with the rest of his group, during the encounter against the Aracnasite in the 3rd episode of The Secret in the Forest.[43]
Overcomed[]
Hoplomania: Obsession with firearms. Acquired also in the 2nd episode, during a fit of madness. According to the Game Master, “having seen that creature exploding with Liz’s fire and everyone shooting inside it made you realize that firearms are actually much more interesting and powerful than you imagined before”.[44] With that, in the 5th episode, he took possession of the rifle that belonged to Rodolfo and created an obsession with it.
Catapedamania: Obsession with jumping from high places. Acquired on the 2nd episode of The Secret in the Forest after Team H found the Ooze Maggot at the Cell 5.[45] The obsession has since been overcome, as Joui has not approached any high place for a long time.
Consecutive Scares: After seeing Tristan being killed in front of him, in the 10th episode of Deconjuration, Joui started to get scared with random things happening around him, like street noises, footsteps or people touching things, probably fearing that it was the Traveler. These scares lasted for six hours.[46]
Temporary Paranormal: Due to the fight against the Traveler, Joui developed a strong repudiation for everything paranormal, refusing to use rituals for a while.[47]
Nightmare[]
"I woke up in a dark corridor and noticed a silhouette watching me, at the end of it. When I got closer, I realized it was my dad, except his face was covered in blood. And he told me 'everything's gonna be fine' [...].
[...] Then everything stopped, and the voice said to me again, 'Now, you're next'."
Rituals and Abilities[]
Rituals[]
Deconjuration[]
Cicatrization Ritual "Mateo": Holding the ashes close to his heart, Joui recites the name of one of his deceased friends, Mateo, extends his arm and releases them near the wound. To perform this ritual of the Death element, you need to consume half a portion of human ashes and focus on the symbol. The user is able to accelerate the healing of an injury, leaving a spiral-shaped scar.[48] In the 10th episode of Deconjuration, Joui used this ritual to heal a wound in the mouth of Luciano, caused by the Traveler of the Devilish Mansion.
Forced Coincidence Ritual "Rodolfo": After transcending in the 12th episode of Deconjuration, Joui passed one of the paranormal barriers with a cursed object. He chose his archetype, this being 'Combatant', but chose no skill. In addition, he learned the ritual of 'Forced Coincidence', which gives him advantage to counter and block all physical blows. This is an Energy ritual and requires Joui to be seeing the symbol, have a technological object in hand and be close to a source of electricity.[49]
Abnormal Dread Ritual: After encountering the Lurker in the 14th episode of Deconjuration, the agent found underneath the body of the creature, a paper embedded with the image of a symbol composed by the elements of Knowledge and Fear. The despicable aura of the ritual causes the target to be temporarily paralyzed, but also gives him an advantage in rolltests of listening and finding. To use the ritual, it is necessary to draw the symbol on the ground and step on it, thus enabling the casting of the ability.[50]
Calamity[]
Shadow Teleport: Joui enters his own shadow and is able to emerge from it in areas within his reach.[51][fn 4]
Shadow Portal: Joui had a ritual that created a portal through the shadows, and an object such as his katana would be transported to his hand.[52][fn 5]
Abilities[]
Despair Look: Joui can paralyze an enemy with fear by facing him, making him lose the round if he can’t resist, or make him faded.[53][fn 6]
Dismember: When Joui leaves a target in the Dying state he can dismember a member of it. If the damage is enough to kill, Joui can choose to decapitate his target.[54][fn 7]
Powerful Attack: The user can spend 2 EP on an attack that uses Marksmanship or Melee to choose between gaining +5 on the attack test or dealing +1 damage if hit. For every 2 additional EP spent, the user receives +5 in the attack test or +1 damage, being able to spend a maximum of 6 EP. The EPs are still consumed if the attack goes wrong.[55]
One by One: When dropping a target or injuring him, Joui can attack another nearby target as a free action.[56][fn 8]
Secret Technique: Using 2 EP, allows its user to use maneuvers as free action during combat. Joui possessed the Secret Technique - Disarm: user and target make a Strength + Melee test against each other. If he wins the test by more than 5 points, Joui disarms the opponent who needs to spend a main action on the next turn if he wants to recover the lost weapon.[57]
Paranormal Resitances: By wielding the Despair Mask as Celestine in the past, Joui acquired +5 Knowledge damage resistance.[58]
Precognition: As a sixth sense, the user feels the approach of others around them, gaining +5 defense for short-range attacks.[59]
Volatile Attack: Whenever attacking with a two-handed weapon, Joui can spend 1 EP to double his strength bonus on attack damage, going from +6 to +12.[60]
Destructive Attack: Whenever he uses the "Powerful Attack" skill, declaring it, Joui gains +1 damage die for every two EPs spent on the previous skill.[61]
Cursed Items[]
Mask from the People in the Shadows: A black mask with red details, containing the Despair Mask Symbol marked insite it.[20] This mask is granted to those who belong to the Sect of the Masks, allowing its user to have access to some of the skills of the Masks, as well as a strengthening resistance to Knowledge.[fn 9]

Deconjuration[]
Katana |
A sword with "Jō" (ジョー) carved in katakana on the base, given to Joui by Mr. Verity. After the events of the 6th episode of Deconjuration, this katana is cursed with a ritual of death, gaining black spiral marks all over the blade.[65] |
---|---|

Grenade "Sakura" |
Named after the traditional Japanese cherry trees, this grenade was a gift from Erin to Joui, who used it to blow up a wall of the Devilish Mansion in the 10th episode of Deconjuration.[68] |
Calamity[]
![]() Katana (Relic of Energy) |
Joui remains with his traditional Japanese sword with curved blade and filled with black spirals, cursed with Death. After the events of the 8th episode of Calamity, the katana now contains the Relic of Energy, assuming a bright shape similar to a lightsaber[21] and on its sheath there's Sigils of Knowledge that shine purple, representing the word "Host".[69] |
---|---|
Ereshkigal | A double blade cursed with Sumerian scripts on both sides, plus a chain that was attached to Gal, before Joui teared from his arm by cutting him in a stroke of fury.[38] |
![]() Shinokage |
After his katana became the Relic of Energy, in the 9th episode of Calamity, The Magistrate gifts him with a new weapon, a black blade Katana, curse with Knowledge, with Sigils of Knowledge that shine gold on its blade, named Shinokage (Shadow of Death).[22] |
Relationships[]
- Antônio Pontevedra: By Balu’s flashy nature, Joui demonstrated some confusion with his actions, but still admired his strength and showed companionship with the veteran. During the battle against The Host, Joui demonstrated understanding of his companion’s side, stating that he also sometimes feels useful only to take attacks in place of allies.[70]
- Arthur Cervero: Having similar personalities, Joui found himself creating a friendship with Arthur, and whenever necessary, he supported him as well as the others on the team. Arthur was super happy to meet Joui again, and the feeling is reciprocal, showing the prevalent friendship between the two. Joui expressed his admiration for him constantly, praising him and showing concern for him. Both were so fond of him that Joui considered him part of his family, often acting as true brothers. After almost a year apart because of the agreement with the masks, Joui showed himself to be very happy and relieved to see his friend again, even having some panic attacks for not having been by his side all this time. The two continued to support each other and worry about each other until the end. Soon after Arthur discovers Joui’s death, he is very shaken and disappointed, knowing that he had had his "brother" back only to be separated again, yet Arthur thanks Joui for helping him during the battle against Kian and bid him farewell with pride of what his partner was able to do.
- Beatrice Portinari: Joui saw Beatrice the same way Liz saw him when he was a rookie: someone who needs to be protected to the fullest. He seemed to have nurtured a fondness for Beatrice, and wanted to take care of her as he could, starting a bilateral friendship.
- Carina Leone: Joui and Carina, for having similar life history and motivations, got along right away. It was evident that Joui cared for her, sometimes trying to prevent her from getting hurt, and said he admired the courage of the Italian and had a certain confidence in her, leaving Dante in her hands due to him having fainted because of The Host's game, also leaving his sword in her hands. Joui comforted Carina by hearing her say that she is not strong enough, stating that he would never abandon her and that the Leone’s family is fighting alongside her. Shortly before Joui’s death, Carina appears to despair at the possibility of seeing her companion die, throwing herself at Kian without thinking twice to try to help the young man, demonstrating that she cared very much about him.
- Cristopher Cohen: Joui was a fan of Cristopher’s work, and it took him a few hours to recognize his idol. While maintaining great admiration and respect for Cris, Joui ended up creating a small air of disappointment due to the stuntman’s scandalous attitudes throughout the investigation. Still, he found Cris very amusing, and his loss affects him emotionally.
- Dante: Joui had not hidden at any time his aversion to Dante, showing himself cold and rude towards him. However, he recognized the usefulness of his abilities and lessened his hostility for the sake of the mission. After the events at the St. Menefreda Orphanage, Joui begins to trust Dante and even suggests that he join Ordo Realitas to defeat their common enemy: Gal. Dante saw Joui as the most conducive to leading D-Force, even if they disagree sometimes, they respect each other as allies. Joui supported Dante in the difficult times he went through with the situation of the Existed Beatrice, calming him down when he became blind after accessing her mind and helping him finish her with a shot to the head. After almost a year apart because of the agreement with the masks, the two reunited and appeared to be very happy to be together again. Dante realized that Joui, from time to time, had panic attacks for not having witnessed the events of his life throughout this period in which he stayed away from the team, making sure to have him around so as not to make him feel alone. Joui also showed care for his friend, even taking a shock of energy so that Dante did not suffer for it.
- Elizabeth Webber: Joui saw Elizabeth first as a mentor, his senpai. When he entered the Order, he became Liz’s student in preparation for his future paranormal investigations. In situations of danger, the two were cooperative and protective with each other. Elizabeth felt an obligation in maternal rhythm to protect him, and even saved his life more than once. Joui was extremely concerned about Liz’s whereabouts, and intended to protect her, even though he was no longer her apprentice. Her death completely destroys him, since he considered her a mother, and she was also killed by his own sword, in front of him.[71]
- Erin Parker: Although they have only recently met, Joui and Erin already liked each other because of their passions for explosions, starting a mutual friendship. Joui used to be embarrassed when interacting with Erin. In the 17th episode of Deconjuration it's revealed that Joui and Erin had reciprocal feelings in a lovely way.[72]
- Family: His relationship with his parents was rather distant and cold. His father is a serious and conservative businessman, coming from a traditional Japanese family and disapproved of Joui’s decisions to escape family customs. His mother is a Brazilian who thought she had an obligation to agree with her husband, not giving much of an opinion.[73] It is known that Joui has a sister, one year older than him, who supported him in deciding to pursue a career in gymnastics.[74] Despite missing their presence, their physical distance and disapproval of their career choice made this relationship almost non-existent. The only time more sensitive with his family during the season was after the death of Cristopher Cohen, when Joui called his father stating that he loved him (a phrase that his father did not repeat or answered).[75] In the moment of his death, Joui had one last vision of his family, with his sister turning to look at him, smiling and crying a tear. According to Luba, this was the only time Joui felt truly loved by them.[76]
- Fernando Carvalho: At first, although Joui and Fernando were not close, it was evident that he cared for the guy, as well as the others, getting along better with him than with his husband Luciano, getting calm when he noticed that who was in "control" was Fernando. Joui gradually noticed the man’s naivety and kindness and the two became friends.
- Gal: Joui was treated by Gal as an insect, someone unable to surpass him in power. By witnessing Gal murder his maternal figure in front of him, Joui began to harbor a huge hatred for the Escribe, becoming an avenger and completely changing his way of acting. Upon his return in Calamity, Gal faces him as an enemy far more powerful than he is, making him resort to methods of persuasion to bring the agent to Kian’s side. In addition, Gal displayed an overwhelming fear of Joui by witnessing a show of strength from him. Their relationship was one of mutual hatred, so much so that during the debate proposed by the Host to save Gal’s life, Joui strongly opposed the decision of his companions Dante and Arthur, saying that he did not care that he died there, which resulted in a strong discussion.
- Ivete Beicur: Although Joui was embarrassed around her at times, he considered her part of his family, calling her "aunt" on several occasions.[77] Since the massacre of the Scoundrel Vultures, Joui began to feel guilty for the losses of Ivete and Arthur, always showing concern for her safety and treating her with great affection. Ivete confesses to Kaiser on the final episode of Deconjuration that she's sterile, and that if she could have children, she would like them to be like him, Joui and Arthur.[78]
- Kaiser: Joui showed interest in the figure of Cesar at first sight, even tried to start conversations with him, due to his friendly nature. He sometimes wanted to teach exercises to Cesar, stating that his posture is incorrect. Eventually, a friendship was created between the two. Although Joui liked Cesar, he felt that his behavior was at various times reckless. In the third season, Joui claimed that Kaiser was one of his best friends, and cared about his mental and physical health. Joui had a great admiration for Kaiser, to the point of calling him a hero, and hoped that the hacker would protect his friends when he was not there to do so, showing such affection in saying that he considered him family. In his farewell video, Kaiser admits that Joui’s kindness touched him, and that for him, Joui’s heart was impossible to be corrupted due to the purity that came from him, stating that he was one of the lights of his life. After coming out of control of the Sect of the Masks, Joui decides to give up his powers to thus know what happened to Kaiser and everyone else in that lost year. After finding out, he watches his friend’s tearful farewell video, admitting how grateful he was to be his brother and that he was proud of him for being the hero he knew he was, calling him Angel of the Night.
- Kian: Joui never demonstrated feeling intimidated or afraid of Kian, constantly teasing him when he could, repeating several times that Kian was desperate and that the Realizer of the Calamity had already lost the fight. Even during his death, Joui kept looking into Kian’s eyes, reaffirming that the occultist would fall.
- Luciano Carvalho: At first, Joui did not approve of Luciano’s achievements, and claimed to rely more on the occultist that he barely knows than in him, saying that he is no better than the occultists imprisoned at the base of the Order. Over time, Joui realized that Luciano acted more than he thought, but that he was not a bad person, but just someone with a short temper who did not know how to deal very well with others, admitting that he was strong and important in the fights, and even if the two of them had a disagreement from time to time, they developed a friendship that would make Luciano respect him as leader and call him "captain".
- Matheus: As seen in the 15th episode of Deconjuration, Joui had a friend called Matheus. It is not known if Joui told him about the Order or something like that.[79]
- Rubens Naluti: Due to Rubens being more closed, Joui and he interacted few times, but it was clear that they cared about each other’s well-being. Joui showed great concern to Rubens after the games of The Host, embracing and comforting him. Joui, in the 6th episode of Calamity, showed some concern and affection for Rubens, as seen when he felt compelled to ask for him, as Amalia, to let him win the Host’s last game with the promise that he would save both Rubens and his other teammates. Once everyone regained consciousness, Joui’s first attitude was to hug and ensure Rubens' safety after the incident.[80]
- Thiago Fritz: As with Liz, Joui considered Thiago similarly, treating him as a respectable teacher, almost a father to him. They met in the same setting where Joui met Liz, where the boy and his friends were attacked by a paranormal creature. Joui was instructed by Thiago and Liz how to act in front of paranormal cases, being like a student of both. Although the two disagreed with some decisions, Joui always learned from Thiago, and maintained a great respect and admiration towards him, keeping him in his memory with affection after his death.
- Tristan Monteiro: They were never very close, but Joui cared and showed concern about him the same way he cared about his other teammates. Joui was the one who tried to save him from death in his last moments of life, but ended up failing, no matter how hard he tried.
- Three friends: Mateo, Rodolfo and Taka[81] were Joui’s three friends before the tragedy that made him know the Order. Mateo was Italian, Taka was Japanese and Rodolfo was Brazilian. The three were very close and shared an amulet representing their friendship with flags of other friends' countries. Joui’s bracelet then held the flag of Japan, Brazil and Italy.[82]
Trivia[]
- Luba was inspired by some aspects of the series Jojo's Bizarre Adventure to create Joui.[83]
- He got inspired by the character Guido Mista to put Tetraphobia on his character since he also has the phobia and is quite paranoid about it, rejecting anything involving the number 4, even in simple things such as pieces of cake, room numbers, numbers of bullets, among others.
- Joui’s name was inspired by the protagonists of the series, where almost all have "Jo" in their names.
- Joui's favorite color is blue, according to himself.
- According to Luba, many "irrational" actions taken by Joui in The Secret in the Forest were a sign of his personality and sanity withering.
- If Joui had not obtained sanity for having felt empathy for the Source, or if Liz had died at the hands of the God of death, Joui would have gone insane watching the Holy Cradle burn.
- In the early episodes of The Secret in the Forest, Joui Jouki’s name was written as "Jyoui Jyouki", but, since in Romaji (Japanese transcribed) there's no consonant "y", it was removed.
- Said by Luba on a video, Joui's portuguese speaking is very good due to his mother being originally brazilian.
- Joui teached gymnastics class sometimes.[79]
- All the agents of the Order are on Joui's important persons list, along with his family.[84][9]
- Joui and his friends Mateo, Rodolfo and Taka, made a trip to the Mount Fuji, being the last vacation trip made by the group of friends.[9]
- Joui's hair reference in Calamity came from the character Levi Ackerman, from Attack on Titan.[85]
- Joui is currently the second most appeared protagonist in the universe, having appeared in 40 episodes in total.
- Joui was born in Japan, had his first mission in Brazil, and his last mission was in Italy, the same order of flags on his bracelet.
- Joui is one of the three characters featured on the cover of the Paranormal Order RPG Playbook.[86]
- While under the effect of The Devil's Hatred, Joui had infinite HP, sanity and EPs, in addition to having 90% Paranormal Exposure.[87] However, he couldn't act exactly as he wanted, because his emotions were also intensified by Blood.[88]
- If Joui had zeroed his HP in the 2nd episode of Calamity, he’d just be one round out of action and have his life recovered on the next turn.[89]
- When asked which element Joui would connect, Luba said he thinks he would choose Knowledge or Fear.[90]
- Joui was the first and only character to have a "cinematic" based on his final moments, and an episode ending dedicated to him.[91]
- Joui has four theme songs in total, being them: "Mascarado", used on the ending of the 17th episode of Deconjuration, "Joui's Theme",[92] "Warrior" and "Doumo. Owarimasu".
- Although not in fact an official theme of the character, the song "Blood", a battle soundtrack in Deconjuration, was often called "Joui's Theme" by Luba himself for playing for the first time during Joui’s introduction to the season: so the song’s melody appears in Joui's Theme and Doumo Owarimasu, two theme songs of the character, referencing the joke between the players.
- On the "cinematic" of Joui's death, the phrase "Thank you. It's over." appears in 3 different languages: italian, japanese and portuguese; that are the nationalities of his three dead friends on his first encounter with the Paranormal.[93]
- There is a drawing of Joui placed as an Easter Egg in one of the village houses in The Secret in the Island.[94]
- Joui’s birthday is the same day as Leonardo Costa, Luba’s husband.
- In addition, his birthday (11/17) matches with both episodes that Joui "died", with him sacrificing his existence to the Sect of the Masks in the 17th episode of Deconjuration and having his end in the hands of Kian in the 11th episode of Calamity.
- Joui is the main character with the most kills, having killed a total of 48 monsters and people.

- ↑ Despite it being stated that Joui is 24 years old in April 2020 in his introduction in the 1st episode of The Secret in the Forest, Joui had not yet celebrated his birthday on November 17th and was still 23 years old during that season and Deconjuration.
- ↑ Joui’s height was supposed to be 5.51 feet when he was being created, but because of an error in the sheet that Luba gave to Cellbit made him stand at 5.9 feet tall as his official height.
- ↑ Even though the token was showing his bow, Luba describes that he only got his katana at the time.
