GM

Broken arm, y'know?

Jorel[2]

Jorel Lagos is one of the protagonists of the series Paranormal Order, present in Gruesome Christmas.[3]

Jorel, after breaking his arm invading the stage of the show of his favorite band and finding that his brother already had other plans for Christmas, decides to meet with old school colleagues at the Goodwill Moon's Camp.

At the end of the events of Gruesome Christmas, after using the mask of Alice Lucina and killing two persons, Jorel loses complete control, having his mind destroyed by the thoughts of the mask and becoming the Menhunter. After that, he was arrested by the agents of Ordo Realitas, that received the call of the survivors in the camp.

Appearance[]

Jorel is a fair-skinned man, blue eyes and shaved white hair, with his drawn skull face winking behind his head. He wears an oversized red shirt with the print of his favorite band, a gray jorts along with white socks with designs of red hearts and red sneakers with white details. Jorel also adorns his look with several piercings on the face and chain earrings, along with the presence of his nasal dilator.

In a recent event, during the show of his favorite band, Jorel ended up breaking his left arm, which required the placement of a plaster for his recovery.

Personality[]

Jorel is a somewhat shy and withdrawn person, but relatively conversational at times, and can be considered as charismatic and persuasive. Jorel cared a lot about his best friend Nathalia, always supporting and counting on her. Despite this, he was able to involve her, as well as her other colleagues, in his plan to save his missing brother. With this, Jorel was extremely determined and loyal to his brother, but also enormously selfish and inconsequential.

By using Alice Lucina's mask, the Menhunter acts in a more confident, impulsive and somewhat mockering way, doing what he wants and when he wants, turning against his own brother, his colleagues and betraying the Goodwill Moon's Camp killers, that had shown another face of themselves to him.

Biography[]

Past[]

Jorel was born from Joaquim and Joelma Lagos on December 31, 2003, from Curitiba, Paraná.[4] Since childhood, Jorel enjoyed entertainment, making several imitations, creating stories and also presenting his "numbers" to his neighbor, Nathalia Scompa, with whom he has created a strong bond of friendship,[5] even though she was the same age as his older brother, Jorge. And speaking of the two brothers, the relationship between them was somewhat troubled: although both were taught to love each other, Jorge felt a lot of envy of his youngest because of the greater attention that his parents gave to Jorel. This culminated in many times Jorge isolating or diminishing Jorel, who didn't understand why his older brother was having such attitudes, since he only liked to play and make his imitations. Even so, Jorel still had his brother as a reference, loving him tirelessly.

In 2013, at the age of 10, Jorel auditioned for a highly anticipated film at the time, called "Home Along", and ended up being the lead actor. However, this caused his family to have to split, with Joelma and Jorge staying in Curitiba, and Joaquim and Jorel moving to Rio de Janeiro, so they could follow the film’s recordings. Last Christmas before the boy moved, Nathalia gave him the movie that the two most watched, "The Nightmare After Christmas", while Jorge gave him his favorite shirt: the red t-shirt with the logo of their favorite band, Gulliraz.

With the success of the film, Jorel needed to stay away from his family longer, given that the film would receive a sequel. Therefore, during the recording period, Jorel made annual visits to Curitiba to celebrate Christmas and his birthday with his family. And even having achieved his dream, it was noticeable that with each visit, his brother moved further and further away from him. And in this, several thoughts surrounded the boy, who realized the consequences of early fame, questioning himself whether to leave home to follow his dream had been worth it and if his fame made the people he loved move away from him. Because of these thoughts, feeling guilty for having divided the family and also by the pressure from the media, Jorel ended up isolating himself more and more, not appearing in any other press vehicle, social medias and being absent more and more in family life. In addition, he did home schooling, which contributed to not having contact with anyone else.

Jorel’s absence became more discrepant during the pandemic, when "Home Along" returned to the top of streaming platforms, with several news tabloids and digital influencers creating content about "what happened with the film's actor?", "where is he now?" and etc. That was the rock bottom for Jorel, who once again was suffocated by fear and anxiety to appear to the public. Not even his father tried to help him, since from the beginning of fame he seemed to neglect the boy and only enjoyed the success that he had generated: used the money to make several trips, to cheat on his wife and to charge more and more his son to perform again and accumulate more money. Afraid of what he would do if he told anyone about it, Jorel kept silent, isolated and completely alone. After all, he was very young. He still couldn't understand the complexity of the situation. Year after year passed, Jorel didn't leave the house and didn't talk to anyone. But he thought of an exit.

Wanting to return to anonymity, Jorel decided to change completely. Took his shirt from Gulliraz, shaved and painted his hair and thought of another dream that had in mind, this one that was with his brother: to make music. During this period, he began to make several musical productions and post them on YouTube, using the pseudonym NGHTMRZ, a name that brought together references to his favorite band and movie. The pandemic passed and some songs of Jorel went viral, but still, he managed to remain anonymous, not following a specific genre, but mixing them.

In 2022, after years isolated from social media and the public, Jorel decided to contact Jorge, scheduling a meeting to spend Christmas together and also meet again, as well as seeing Nathalia once again. But before, on December 20, Jorel, extremely excited, watches for the first time a show, and not just a show: the Gulliraz's show in Rio de Janeiro. Feeling alive for the first time, Jorel acts inconsequently and jumps on stage in the middle of his favorite song, throwing himself into the crowd to be carried. However, he remembers the moment he throws himself and sees that no one would carry him: On Melancholy River is not one of the best songs to do this. With this, he breaks his arm, but is quickly helped. In the end, even the band’s vocalist, Didi,[6] decided to see the boy to take a picture, praising him for the rockstar attitude that Jorel had. There, Jorel realized: it was worth it.

Later, Jorel went to spend Christmas with his brother. However, he was frustrated when he found out that Jorge cancelled with him to "meet a web girlfriend". And this frustration quickly turned into concern, when Jorge stopped giving news and, searching for the GPS of his cell phone, Jorel realized that he had disappeared on a road near the city of Inquisidor do Vale, in a camp named Goodwill Moon's Camp. Because of this, Jorel made countless calls to the police station in that city, asking for information. Despite this, the police station could not do much and the investigation was archived by Deputy Aguiar, who said he had "personally checked the case".[7]

In an act of despair, Jorel decided to visit Nathalia, with the goal of going after his brother, but without talking about his intentions with his friend. So he suggests that the two of them gather some friends and go to a place to spend Christmas together. In this, Nath takes advantage that her friend, Lila, was already wanting to gather old friends from school to meet again, agreeing with the idea of her best friend. So, the two gather four more friends and head to Goodwill Moon's Camp, very close to where his brother’s bus had passed.

Gruesome Christmas[]

In the late afternoon of December 24, 2022, crammed into a small blue car on a mountainous road in the Paraná region, Jorel arrives with some former colleagues of Nathalia in the Goodwill Moon's Camp. After the first people get out of the car, he is pushed out by his childhood friend, almost falling to the ground because of his broken arm.

After some discussions about who would pick up the luggage, Jorel has his luggage carried by Ricardo Rocha Rodrigues, following the group towards a cabin near where they parked, with Ricardo carrying the other luggage together. When they open the door to the Eclipse Cabin, they see a huge room with partitions of living room, bedrooms and a fireplace. Upon entering the cabin, Jorel realizes that the place is too small for all of them. So the group discusses and makes a decision to go to a better place. With the map that Nathalia took, they see a huge imposing mansion further ahead, called Juno House. Upon arrival, they open the house, revealing a huge space with several religious paintings, many with the face of Jesus Christ, Christmas decorations and rustic rooms. As they split up to see a little of the house, Jorel and Nathalia arrive in a room that has some fallen paintings, especially one of a woman wearing a blood-stained white dress.

The six gather in the kitchen, having the inconveniences of the fallen refrigerator, the lack of cell phone signal, among other problems. Ricardo and Leandro lift the fridge again, while Jorel tells the story of how he got on stage in his favorite band’s show and ended up breaking his arm. While the others separate and go to different places of the house, Jorel and Nathalia go to a library, finding from a vinyl record of the special 25 years of Christmas of the singer Ivone to several horror books like "The Place that Doesn't Exist" and The Lurker and Other Stories. The two also notice some blood stains near a carpet, and while exploring the house further, Jorel finds a handwritten note warning about some dangers of the camp, but without much context. But he notices something else: the handwriting of the note is somewhat familiar.

After some time, the group meets again in the kitchen to get something to eat and to start immediately the Secret Santa they had organized, until suddenly, something begins to scratch the back door. Jorel approaches the sound as Ricardo knocks on the back door, and the scratches begin to get faster, stronger. The athlete claps and asks for whatever was scratching to leave, and then they stop.

Between cries and despair, especially from Shanyqua, Leandro decides to open the door, and to his surprise, a small puppy appears with a collar. Ricardo sees in the collar that his name is Joto, and so they let the puppy pass, who enters the house and begins to scratch the stove, noticing some snacks to eat. Lila decides to take him on her lap and take him with her.

The six gather to eat panettone and turkey breast, and after that, Ricardo takes several selfies of the group to then definitely start the Secret Santa in the living room. Jorel ended up gifting Leandro a grimoire-shaped agenda with an ornament of a goat’s skull, and receiving from Nathalia the book "I Don't Know What You Did Last Christmas". After the end of the game, everyone begins to feel drowsy and begin to get ready for sleep.

Ricardo and Leandro go out to the other cabin to get an extra mattress, leaving Jorel and the others behind. With the moods more calmed, the remaining four decide to play a little Ouija board, but as soon as they were about to start, Ricardo and Leandro return shortly after and report having seen the Night Mutilator, a serial killer responsible for several disappearances in the region. Leandro stands watching from the door, but sees that the killer is approaching and warns his friends to hide.

Jorel, Leandro, Lila and Nathalia try to sneak into the kitchen while Ricardo and Shanyqua run there to look for some weapon. The Mutilator’s steps begin to get closer, as he opens the door of the dining room. Jorel remembers the note he had seen, about the dogs representing something bad and separates from the group, returning to the living room, followed by Nathalia.

The little dog, previously frightened, jumps from Lila’s lap and runs to the other side of the room, distracting the Mutilator. Leandro, Lila and Shanyqua begin to leave through the back door, while Ricardo joins the duo in the living room. Joto begins to follow the group from the living room, while the three begin to divide: Ricardo goes to the entrance, and Nathalia and Jorel enter the next room. Upon entering the next room, Jorel notices the carpet having something under it, but soon hides behind a lamp and a chest of drawers, while Nathalia hides inside a closet. They hear Ricardo being attacked by the Mutilator and subsequently dragged out of the house. Joto arrives at Jorel, trying to call for help, but the boy goes towards the mat, pulling him out and revealing a trapdoor. He also opens the closet where Nathalia had entered, trying to calm her after the chase they had suffered.

Jorel then begins to investigate the place, to find something that may be useful to try to face the killer and save Ricardo and Leandro, who ended up following the serial killer. He sees the girls trying to open an attic, without success, and so, the four go to the only place they hadn't investigated yet: the gaming room. There, they find several old movie posters, a game box from the game Mystery of Horror and some cards of football players, especially a brilliant one of a former player from Palmeiras. Jorel also finds a broken camera, and when trying to use its SD card, even with difficulties, he notices parts of a video of another group of young people screaming and running from something, dropping the camera. In the middle of the video, he realizes that one of the voices is recognizable to him. And with this, he begins to feel strange. He continues to watch the video on the camera in loop, while questioning the group about what makes them put trust in someone, an attitude that everyone considers strange.

When asked about the origin of his strange questions, Jorel reveals: the note he was holding, talking about the "evil dogs", was from his own brother, and he had never rented this camp. He came to this camp in search of his brother, and to not come alone, took advantage of the meeting that Nathalia had arranged to bring people to try to help him. However, this is not accepted kindly by Shanyqua, who enters into a discussion with the boy. After calming her nerves a little, she agrees to help Jorel find his brother, despite being one foot behind.

With this, the group of the house decides to go out looking for Leandro and Ricardo. They start climbing a hill, and in the middle of the way, Jorel almost steps into a bear trap, being helped by Nathalia. When they reach the top, they find a kind of camp with a gravestone near the cliff, marked with the name of Alice Lucina, next to a strange symbol. As Lila says that the symbol is the result of a sacrifice of Blood for the group, she feels a shiver, and seeing the silhouette of the Mutilator, illuminated by the moonlight, in front of the camp, she starts running, alerting the other three. Jorel runs along, followed by Nathalia and Shanyqua, but soon realizes that the only right way is to jump off the cliff. However, seeing Lila stepping in false and having her leg trapped by a bear trap on the ground, Jorel decides to ignore her and run away, being followed by Shanyqua, who also ignores the girl. Nathalia returns to help Lila, and after a few seconds of his escape, Jorel hears the sounds of his two friends, screaming as they are attacked by the Night Mutilator.

The two survivors arrive at a fork, noticing a large chest with a metal padlock, but ignoring beforehand. They return to the mansion, entering through the back door, and then, they hear some knocking sounds on the second floor, specifically in the attic. Ricardo arrives at the house after leaving the pier near the lake, next to Joto and meeting with the two. While trying to open the attic, Jorel notices someone talking from the other side, more people talking and a noise of keys. Incessantly asking to open the door, he becomes desperate, but when it opens, he finally understands the reason.

The three meet with three more survivors: Breno, Melissa and Jorge, Jorel's brother, that were trapped by meat hooks in the attic for the last three days. At first, the six have a slight argument, but after calming their nerves, Jorel notices Jorge, giving him a hug, but still furious. The two begin to argue about why they were there and about family matters, with Shanyqua and Melissa coming into conflict as well. However, their attention turns first to Joto, that followed Ricardo and was also at the bottom floor, and for something that was stinking on the other side of the attic. While Jorge picks up Joto who had stayed downstairs, and Breno and Ricardo put a barrel on top of the trapdoor to prevent any of the killers from entering, the rest of the group investigates the other side of the attic, finding a dead policeman hanging on a hook. With this, the six begin to discuss about the information that each trio had with them, about the history of Alice Lucina, the rituals she and her husband did, the grave previously dug by Jorge, among other matters. When Ricardo notices a staircase next to one of the attic windows, quickly the six organize to get out of the attic there. After some obstacles, with the ladder almost falling, everyone manages to get down.

After the descent, they start walking around the camp, soaked by rain. The group notices the old chest that Jorel and Shanyqua had noticed, but when the girl tries to open it, she doesn't notice a bear trap placed right in front of her, trapping her foot and immobilizing her. The rest of the group tries to free her, while Breno opens the chest with one of the keys of the set, revealing some bizarre items, such as a revolver, the same mask that Melissa had found before, two grenades and a red lock with several symbols.

Jorel immediately takes and keeps the revolver with him, but while the rest of the group tries to help her, they do not notice the silence. The sound of the request for silence. Coming as a shadow, the figure passes through everyone, appearing behind Shanyqua and stabbing her on the back. At the same time, on the other side, the Night Mutilator cornered them. Jorel tries to shoot one of the assassins, but without success, and so he decides, along with the others, to run away, leaving only Ricardo and Shanyqua behind. Shortly after, only Ricardo reaches the rest of the group, while the cries of Shanyqua being killed by the assassins echo from behind.

After the escape, the rest of the group continues to run looking for something to help them, finding the bus that the first trio was before. Walking a little further forward, they find the cabin where Ricardo had gotten hooked, where Jorge, when entering, almost steps in a bear trap. When entering, they notice a radio to use. Breno turns on the radio, putting in the frequency indicated by the card of the police officer, contacting someone on the other side of the line, which was part of a kind of group: the Blue Condominium Detectives.

The person tells them to set up a plan and join together to fight the assassins as they prepare to go to the scene, stating that the assassins could be strong but they are dumb. As the group discusses how to fight the killers, they recall a paper talking about a poem of Santa fighting an evil force, and seeing that the drawing of the figures looked like the killers, they try to come up with a plan to confront them. Meanwhile, Ricardo comes down from the cabin and finds both Mutilator's Hunting Dogs. Melissa stands in front to try to distract them with the plush bone she had, succeeding.

However, when Joto starts moving inside her shirt and falls, she fails to maintain the distraction, and one of the dogs jumps on her, biting her arm and the other her clothes. While Breno and Ricardo try to help her, Jorge runs away, taking the mask from the girl’s arm, Jorel starts running with him, while the Night Mutilator watches them in the background. However, the pace of his race accelerates when Ricardo kills one of his dogs. In the middle of his run, Jorel stumbles and can't move much. Seeing the Night Mutilator approaching, he senses his death, but soon realizes that it's not him who has a large target on his back. The killer ignores everyone and runs after Ricardo. Meanwhile, Melissa and Jorge get into a fight because of the mask, and seeing the situation, Jorel points the gun that he picked up towards the girl. With no choice, she and Jorge agree to give the mask to the armed boy, hoping that this was a decision that would help them face the killers. But while the two continue to talk, Jorel acts on impulse.

He puts the mask.

With the mask on his face, Jorel begins to feel a plague of feelings. Everything is blood for him. Flashes of bodies, guts, blood for everything around him begin to appear in his mind. Filled by the incessant thirst for blood of the Menhuntress, he points the gun at Melissa and shoots, blowing the girl’s head, leaving Breno and Jorge horrified. Jorge, shocked by the scene, tries to reconcile with his brother, but is threatened to leave. Meanwhile, Breno returns to investigate the destroyed cabin.

Jorel feels the anger in his body. Feeling that wearing this mask seems better for him. So he goes towards the lake, watching the Night Mutilator throw his axe at Ricardo and hit him in the chest. However, seeing the boy with the mask, Aguiar becomes shocked and static, feeling that finally his master returned. The Moon is beautiful today. And Jorel, who was in ecstasy because of the mask, but still pretending to be Alice Lucina, breaks the pier, leaving the Mutilator trapped. Realizing that he was deceived, the killer tries to throw his axe in the direction of Jorel, missing his target. Feeling helpless, he yells, saying that Jorel is not worthy to wear the mask, hearing from the boy that his role was fullfilled long ago. And so, he leaves whistling On Melancholy River.

On the way back, Jorel meets Jorge and Breno. Jorge tries to reconcile with his brother, who is taken by anger and thirst for blood, ignores what he says and begins to aim at the two. He then begins a countdown, threatening to kill the two and seeing them running away. As they run away, the X-figure comes behind Jorel, giving a light laugh and starting to talk with him. She knows he has a wish, which Jorel leaves the question open to try and buy time for the other two. Still, the figure thinks that maybe he joining the team of assassins could be a great addition to help them find the Crown of Thorns.

However, Jorel has other plans. At the end of the conversation, both killers decide to compete to chase Breno and Jorge. But the two throw one of the grenades they had picked up, the smoke grenade, to get away from the killers. Jae, realizing that his favorite part has arrived, takes the impulse to run, but Jorel, not letting himself be taken by their manipulation, pulls down his hood, revealing Jae’s face and shooting her in the face, but only grazing him. She tries to counter-attack with her knife, but ends up missing and taking a shot in the leg. Thus, a gruesome duel begins between the two.

Jae tries to crawl into Jorel, who jumps, but he is hit by a kick in the impulse and is knocked back to the ground. They jump on top of Jorel, who tries to shoot but misses and has his gun thrown aside. Jorge and Breno return to help Jorel, and Jorge advances towards Jae with the knife he took from Melissa. However, Breno asks him to move away, pulling the pin of the remaining grenade and preparing to throw it like a basketball pitch. He throws and the flashbang bursts, stunning all three. The three come together to try to attack Jae, tearing a bit of his jacket. But she moves away and points behind them, saying that now they were screwed.

They look back and see a huge man wearing a 50’s diving helmet. This is Dalmo, the bus driver who took Jorge’s group to camp three days ago. However, as he begins to advance towards them, a car horn and a scream echo from behind of Dalmo, who is run over by a huge van with a symbol. Leaving the car, a woman and two men, carrying both bladed and firearm weapons, appear.

They ask the trio to hold Jae, while Dalmo remains on the ground, run over by the car. The young woman begins to draw a symbol on the ground, but what she doesn't expect is what Jorel does: shoot Jae. However, Jorge jumps in front of the shot, causing a death of brother by brother. Because of this, Jorel begins to feel lost. He is no longer Jorel. He is now the Menhunter. Breno tries to hold him, being helped by the other two young men. He takes off Jorel’s mask, but he remains insane. Jorel is thrown into the van of the Order along with Jae, being taken by the agents as a prisoner.

Abilities[]

Magnum Opus: Jorel is famous for one of his works. Once per "mission", he can determine that a character involved in an interaction scene recognizes him, causing him to receive +5 in Presence tests and Presence-based skills against that character. By the GM's opinion, he can receive this bonus in other situations where he would be recognized.

Effort: When taking a skill test, Jorel can spend 1 DP to get +2 on that test.

Horror Book: It’s a book about a killer who returns to torment a group of young people who killed him in a road accident. The title of the book inspires a paranoia that they know of Jorel’s secrets, making him receive +1d20 in Perception, Intuition and Investigation tests.

Sudden Violence: If he is wearing the mask and hits an attack, Jorel can spend 2 DP to deal +1d4 Blood damage on his target. If the target is a killer and is unmasked, the die increases to 1d6.[8]

Sigh for Me: While wearing the mask, Jorel gets +2 Defense. Also, when he reaches 0 HP for the first time, instead of going into the Dying status, he recovers 1d4 HP and remains in the fight.[8]

Cursed Items[]

Hunting Mask: A cracked mask with a disturbing appearance, modeled to mimic live flesh. Traces of blood can be seen on its surface.[9] This item belonged to Alice Lucina, the Menhuntress, and was buried with her, but dugged up and later taken by Jorel, who wore it. The mask gave him extreme confidence, as well as making him stronger. It was also, gradually, flooding his mind with violence until turning him, entirely, in the Menhunter.[10]

Arsenal[]

Old Revolver An old revolver with a full barrel, but no additional ammo. Its six bullets were used.

Relationships[]

  • Jorge Lagos: Jorel has a troubled relationship with his older brother, because of disagreements and past fights involving his career as an actor, with Jorge accusing him of having "separated" the family, Jorel is angry at his brother because, according to him, Jorge "is a frustrated who had the same conditions as him". Despite this, Jorel doesn't seem to hate his brother completely, because even after meeting him after witnessing several deaths, he showed happiness and relief, besides choosing to let his brother escape from the camp, even having the opportunity to kill him.
  • Nathalia Scompa: Jorel and Nathalia were childhood friends, and because of this they cared about each other. During the trip, Nathalia was worried about how Jorel would fare when he met her former colleagues, often asking him how he felt. Jorel always stayed close to her when he could, mostly talking his ideas and what he wanted to do for Nathalia first, before sharing with the rest, besides, he was clearly more shaken by her death than his other colleagues.

Soundtracks[]
