Biography[]

Past[]

Barnabé was born on the island of Tipora in March 2, 1966, through the midwife Olga Eiland. In an unknown moment of his life, he acquired Prosopagnosia, condition that made it impossible to differentiate the faces of people, being diagnosed on July 25, 1999 through the medical opinion of Dr. Genaro Trevo in Vitória.[4]

In 1982, at 16, in the middle of a full moon night, Barnabé and his sister, Berenice Aleno, along with their friends Bartô Castello, Evandro Eiland, Lívia Lima and Návia Eiland decided to invade the Moretti's Mansion to unravel the mysteries present within it, action that idealized by Evandro. After Návia’s withdrawal from entering the 3rd floor to remain in the mansion’s library, the other five children decided to walk to the upper floor. In the corridors of the third floor, Barnabé felt something for the first time, because of a painting present in that environment that left him in a trance, staying behind while the other children moved forward and opened the door of the painting studio. However, amid the confusion, Evandro bumped into Bartô, making him open the door suddenly and fall with his arm inside one of the paint pots of the painter, who was in a wheelchair inside the studio. Frightened, the four children fled the scene amid screams. However, Barnabé, who was paralyzed looking at one of the corridor’s paintings, had stayed behind as the painter approached him. After this, both went together to the studio, where Barnabé painted his first painting using Constantino’s special paint, and had the best feeling of his entire life.

After that day, the doors to the 3rd floor were changed, the keys were hidden, a few years later the painter disappeared and the mansion was abandoned, leaving Barnabé in a huge abstinence, obsessed with feeling again what he had felt painting his first painting, and aiming once again to create the "True Art".

In mid-2010, at the age of 44, after the birth of his niece Amora Aleno and the tragic death of his sister, Berenice, Barnabé was willing to take care of his niece, since Adrian Vurtoren, the child's father, was unable on account of his responsibilities as a boatman of the island and upon the fateful events of the death of his beloved. In an unknown period, Barnabé introduced his old "Imaginary Friend" to Amora, starting his plan to witness the feeling of the "True Art" again.

In June 2022, now 56, Barnabé learned of the arrival of new visitors to the Island, who would be housed in the mansion of the disappeared painter, and saw this as an opportunity to finally revisit the 3rd floor and create the True Art. The night before the arrival of the Florence family and the real estate agent Cavalcante Bueno to Tipora, Barnabé spread pieces of meat with chemicals and adrenaline in the forest to stir the wild animals and scare the visitors.

The Secret in the Island[]

Day 1[]

Upon the arrival of the new visitors to the island, Barnabé is seen by Milo Castello early in the day next to his niece Amora Aleno, acting as merchant of the island and receiving the fish caught by Bartô Castello.

Over the course of the day, Barnabé was once again seen in his shop at the time when Amora and Ian informed him of the theft of Bisteca by Pedrinho and Vitinho. After assisting in the search and rescue, Barnabé thanks Milo and Olivier for their help, praising the importance and priority of seeing his niece happy, and returning to his home soon after.

Day 2[]

The next day, in a brief moment, Barnabé spotted the real estate agent who had arrived on the island along with the Florence, Cavalcante Bueno, but was unable to recognize him, as the agent was without his vest and hat, and Barnabé’s Prosopagnosia prevented him from distinguishing faces. Cavalcante noticed this peculiarity, writing it down in his diary, and subsequently returned again to talk to Barnabé and investigate the island. During the conversation, Barnabé showed interest in learning more about the 3rd floor of the Moretti's Mansion, asking if the agent had found the key to access the room.

During the afternoon, Barnabé subtly poisoned the meat from the island’s weekly barbecue, which he helped prepare, as a test for the potency of the poison he had picked up, leaving everyone who ate the barbecue at night nauseous. Barnabé did not eat the barbecue, and did not let his niece, Amora, eat it as well. During dinner, Barnabé first spoke with Montel Florence, an art analyst who had been hired to analyze Constantino Moretti’s paintings, discovering that he also dreamed of being an artist, but was unable on account of his Constructional Apraxia. After this discovery, Barnabé made a promise to the analyst, saying that there was a way for him to become a true artist, without even needing to paint, and that he would show him how during the night.

At the end of the fraternization, he offered to help and reside Lívia Lima, by virtue of her drunkenness which made her unable to return to her home at that time. After this, Barnabé snuck into the Moretti's Mansion.

Day 3[]

At dawn on the third day, Barnabé headed to the painting of the Phantom Bride with Montel Florence, leaving him in a trance in front of the painting. Cavalcante, who was in his room next door, listened to Montel in front of the painting, and after trying to calm him, decided to fulfill his requests and try to take him to the 3rd floor of the mansion to try to find out more information about the painter. However, due to the poison put on the barbecue, Cavalcante began to feel sick in the corridor of the 3rd fFloor, propping up on the wall to vomit. Seeing this opportunity gap, in an attempt to aim the feeling of the "True Art" again, and to achieve his goal, Barnabé takes a syringe with poison with him and runs off towards Cavalcante, throwing himself on top of the agent and injecting the liquid into his veins. However, this was not yet the end of the plan.

Barnabé and Montel went together to the Painter’s Studio, where the merchant finally managed to find the paint again, plus a picture showing the landscape of a beach, painted by Leila Lima. Barnabé and Montel then take Cavalcante’s body to the exact position of the beach painted on the painting, and Barnabéas spends time using the painter’s paint to paint the agent’s corpse propped up on the rocks, next to a hooded creature facing him, in order to generate Fear to transform the creature into reality. However, there was an issue: Barnabé was unable to paint Cavalcante’s face because he could not distinguish it from others, and Montel was unable to paint because of his Apraxia condition. Barnabé then uses the paint to melt Cavalcante’s face, digging the meat out with a paint spatula. Thus, everyone would believe that "the creature" painted in the painting had devoured the agent’s face, generating even more fear.

Later in the day, Barnabé told Amora to go play "secret", their favorite game. The game consisted of Amora to go hide with the statue in the cave, and not leave there or tell anyone where she was. The goal was that as many people as possible were looking for the young woman and found the body on the beach, and so it happened. After Milo and Olivier stumbled upon Cavalcante’s corpse while searching for Amora, the commotion and yelling generated was enough to let a large number of people know of the situation. However, it was still not enough. The newcomer partner of Cavalcante, Wanderley, along with the police chief Evandro, managed to calm the population, preventing most of them to see the picture of the scene and felt fear of the creature.

Day 4[]

The day after Cavalcante’s murder, a church rally was held to report and appease the island’s situation. During the event, Barnabé saw an opportunity to finally show the picture of the beach to everyone, positioning himself against Evandro's and Maíra Suna's accusations to Bartô, taking off the sheet of the painting and generating an environment of terror and panic to those present, reporting the extreme moment that the residents of Tipora were living. After clashes and moments of tension, Amelie Florence confronts Barnabé and asks what he knows about these events and the island’s stories. Upon this, he responds by demonstrating being confused without understanding the situation and argues that the paranormal and creatures are just child stories, while looking directly at Lívia Lima.

Upon realizing the emergency health situation of the priest Francisco, Barnabé rushes to help and assist Návia. Then, after they regain control of the situation and talk to Wanderley, Olivier and Amelie, he accepts Wanderley’s request to visit his home, also confirming to the newcomer that Berenice was his sister.

Realizing that his plan to recreate the "True Art" was not successfully completed at that time, an adaptation was necessary. Barnabé suggested that Návia check the existence of fingerprints on the painting to identify the perpetrator. In addition, he handed a note to Montel, informing that a new painting would be made that night, and that the analyst would have to perform the "work" this time, informing that he will take everything that will be necessary to perform the same the next day.

At dusk, during the trio’s visit to the house, Barnabé proves comfortable in the environment and shares the stories about the past of the mansion and its residents, demonstrating mastery over the subjects and the "legends" present on the island. Minutes later, they say goodbye and Barnabé locks his house, where he spends the night painting the new painting.

Day 5[]

During the next day, Barnabé goes to the police station, bringing a poisoned breakfast to Evandro and Bartô. He requests the key to the boat to evacuate the island, arguing that the situation was dangerous and that it would be safer to get everyone out of there, getting the officer’s authorization. Later, at the end of the invasions of infected animals into the village, Barnabé asked Amora to be quiet in her room, no matter what, in order to keep all the villagers away while searching for her. During the investigation, Amelie, Olivier, Wanderley, and Adrian were guided by Barnabé through the forest in search of Amora, and ended up encountering the entrance to a collapsed cave with an ancient statue of a hooded being with a broken face. Barnabé talks about the similarity between the statue and the "imaginary friend" of his niece, and realizing that she was not there, they return to the village.

When they arrived, Barnabé, Olivier and Adrian spots Amora running towards them, first hugging her dad. She says that she didn't leave the room and that she hadn't found her uncle when she left. Until a certain moment, they are faced with a movement in the police station. Seeing that situation, Barnabé ignores and goes home with Amora, asking for Maíra to take care of the children.

At Návia’s house, in an attempt to decide the next steps and locate the key to the boat to evacuate the island, Adrian, Barnabé and Návia tell the story of Berenice’s death, where she was shredded by the boat’s engine and the invasion of the mansion in 1982, where the six children of the time witnessed a mysterious event that changed their lives. Barnabé also tries to learn more about who is Wanderley and his past, without success. After a few more minutes of conversation, the elders decide and go to Barnabé's house to protect themselves.

Day 6[]

During the last day of Tipora Island, a stormy climate and thick fog are witnessed. After discovering the past of Barnabé through the studio's painting, the group formed by Amelie, Bárbara, Milo, Olivier and Wanderley go to the village to confront him, with Evandro - still weakened -, Návia and Otávio. Upon arriving there, Barnabé was in the church closed by barricades, where he clashes with the visitors to convince the residents not to remove the barricades from the door, arguing that it is the creature in disguise. After the confrontation, the residents remove the barricades and they enter the church.

However, Barnabé takes the sheet of a painting that was located in the background, generating a terrifying feeling and an indiscernible emptiness. The surroundings of the environment begins to melt completely and the sound of the bell begins to ring, a passage appears, and comes out of it the Imaginary Friend.

After Barnabé witnessed in wonder the creation of his "True Art", he was caught by his own creation and had his face melted by it, dying in the instant.[3]
